VIRGINIAS WINS THE 63rd
VIRGINIAS-CAROLINAS TEAM MATCHES
RICHMOND, VA (10/18/08) –– The 24-golfer
Virginias squad scored a final-day 14-10 win and captured the closely-contested
63rd Virginias-Carolinas Team Matches by five points, 20½-15½ as the matches
concluded today at The Country Club of Virginia’s James River Course.
Possessors of a one-point lead following first-day four-ball matches, Virginias
regulars posted a 9-7 last day win in singles matches, while the team’s seniors
were also two-point victors, notching a 5-3 victory. On the final day, 14 of the
24 singles matches went to the last hole of the respective match and the two
teams tied those encounters, 7-7.
The Virginias team, captained by Danville’s Harry Lea, took home the Captain’s
Putter Trophy and scored its first victory in the annual matches since 2004,
when the team triumphed on Virginia soil, scoring a 29-19 at Lowes Island Club’s
Island Course in Potomac Falls, Va. A victory in each match scores one point in
the Ryder Cup-style format, and if a match goes 18 holes without a decision,
one-half point is awarded to each side.
Virginias’ regulars got off to a terrific start to the deciding final day, going
unbeaten in the first four matches. The two top-ranked players in the
commonwealth in ’08, top-ranked Roger Newsom (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Keith
Decker (Martinsville, Va.) led the way early, notching wins in the first two
matches. Newsom was the stroke play equivalent of three under par in his 1-up
victory over Dan Hendrickson (Charlotte, N.C.) and holed his 7-iron second shot
for an improbable eagle-2 at the demanding par-4 11th hole to go 3 up on the
second nine. Decker, meanwhile, scored a wire-to-wire 3 and 2 victory over Lee
Palms (Greenville, S.C.). Thereafter, Chesapeake’s Adam Horton (2 and 1) and CCV
member Allan Strange of Richmond (4 and 2) posted wins in matches three and
four, respectively.
During a mid-match stretch, six of the next eight regulars’ matches went to the
18th hole, with Carolinas owning a slim 3½-2½ edge in those encounters. Central
Virginian Tim Kelley (Ashland) posted Virginias only win in that stretch,
draining a three-and-a-half foot birdie putt at the par-5 finishing hole to
upend Scott Harvey (Greensboro, N.C.), 1 up. Also for Virginias, Tim Fisher (Statts
Mills, W.Va.), Allen Barber (Yorktown, Va.) and Ryan Stinnett (Amherst, Va.)
scored one-half point.
In the close matches, Jarrett Grimes (Columbia, S.C.) and Robert Hoadley
(Southern Pines, N.C.) each posted 1 up wins for Carolinas. Also registering
wins for Carolinas in last day action were Steve Liebler (Irmo, S.C.), Sherrill
Britt (West End, N.C.) and Brian Westveer (Charlotte, N.C.).
Needing 12 point on the final day, Alexandria’s Dan Hosek notched a 2 and 1 win
for Virginias’ regulars to give the team 14 points in the matches for the
triumph. Though the ’08 matches were already decided, in the late-going Crozet’s
Nick Little scored a 1-up win for Virginias, while Buck Brittain (Tazewell, Va.)
earned a halve.
For Virginias, Horton, Kelley, Newsom and Little, a first-time event
participant, helped lead the team over the two-day matches, contributing the two
points available.
Five of the eight seniors’ matches went to the last hole. Virginias went 3-2 in
those encounters, with Richmond’s Vinny Giles and Tom Grady (Marshall, Va.)
scoring 1-up victories. Also for Virginias’ Charles E. Green III (Tazewell, Va.)
and northern Virginian John Long (Centreville, Va.) added a full point with
their singles’ wins. Green scored a 3 and 2 victory, while Long notched a 4 and
3 triumph. Meanwhile, Pat Tallent (Vienna, Va.) and Steve Fox (Huntington,
W.Va.) contributed one-half point each for Virginias. Virginias held a 3-1
advantage after the first four seniors’ matches. Long posted a team-leading
point-and-a-half for Virginias seniors over the two days.
For Carolinas in senior action, Brad Burris (High Point, N.C.) and Dennis Helms
(Monroe, N.C.) each recorded victories.
Altogether, Virginias regulars were 15-9 victors in the ’08 matches, while
Carolinas’ seniors notched a 6½-5½ win over the two days.

63rd CAROLINAS-VIRGINIAS TEAM MATCHES
SLATED OCT. 17-18 IN RICHMOND, VA
WEST END, NC (10/15/08) — The Carolinas Golf Association will be
shooting for its fourth straight victory when the 63rd Carolinas-Virginias Team
Matches are played at the Country Club of Virginia's James River Course in
Richmond, VA, Oct. 17-18.
The Team Matches are a Ryder Cup-like event featuring a 24-man team of top
regular and senior amateur players from North and South Carolina against their
counterparts from the Virginia and West Virginia. The matches, conducted jointly
by the Carolinas Golf Association and the Virginia State Golf Association,
consist of modified alternate shot, four-ball match play, and singles
competitions with one point at stake in each match.
The Carolinas leads 45-16-1 all-time in the series, including a stretch from
1971-87 during which the Carolinas team reeled off
17 straight victories. In recent years, the teams have been much more
competitive, with the Virginias winning three straight times from 2002-2004
until the 2005 team, led by playing captain Paul Simson of Raleigh, prevailed by
a seven-point margin. Their 32-16 victory last year at Old Town Club in
Winston-Salem, NC was the third in a row for the Carolinas side.
Simson, although eligible age-wise to compete as a senior for the third straight
year, will be back as a member of the "regular"
Carolinas team, which will be headed by non-playing captain T.
Arnold Edwards of Charlotte.
VSGA points leader Roger Newsom of Virginia Beach and seven-time VSGA golfer of
the year Keith Decker (Martinsville) headline the
24 golfers who will represent the Virginias team in Richmond. The top-ranked
amateur in the commonwealth in ’08, Newsom won this summer’s SunTrust State Open
of Virginia as well as the VSGA Four-Ball Championship and the Portsmouth City
Amateur Championship. He was also a finalist at this summer’s VSGA Amateur
Championship. Decker, meanwhile, won the W. Townes Lea and Chatmoss
invitationals, was the runner-up at the VSGA Four-Ball Championship and competed
in the U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst Resort.
VSGA past president Harry Lea of Danville, VA will lead the Virginias team for a
second straight year.

Course Description: CCV’s James River Course was originally laid out by designer
William Flynn and opened in 1928. Flynn, whose many designs also include The
Homestead’s Cascades Course and Shinnecock Hills Country Club, helped to
transform the golf design landscape during the interwar period. The River
underwent a Rees Jones renovation in the early 1990s. Richmond-based golf course
architect Lester George began restoring the course to the character Flynn
intended in 2003.
Taking into account the advances in modern-day technology, bunkers were reshaped
and pushed further up the landing area, fairways were narrowed where needed and
tees were expanded, all with an eye toward returning to Flynn’s
originally-intended shot values.
In addition to hosting four VSGA State Amateur Championships (1932, 1946, 1989
and 2005) and the 2007 VSGA Women’s Am, the River has been the site of other
significant championships, including the 1955 and the 1975 U.S. Amateur
Championships.
Former United States Golf Association President Fred Ridley won the ’75 U.S. Am,
besting Virginia hopefuls Vinny Giles and Curtis Strange that year before
ousting Keith Fergus in the finals, 2 up.
Directions: Take I-64 to the Gaskins Road South exit. Remain on Gaskins Road
until it dead ends at the club.
