CONNERS AND TAYLOR WIN 4TH DOGWOOD STATE JUNIOR CROWNS

Gastonia, NC (8/21/08) —After three close calls this summer, John Conners of Apex finally secured his first Carolinas Golf Association championship winning the Dogwood State Junior Championship.  Conners, a high school senior, was a semifinalist at the NC Junior and tied for fourth in the Carolinas Junior in July.  Conners finished the 54-hole event at even par on the 6889 yard course at Gaston Country Club in Gastonia, NC.  2007 NC Junior champion Robert Hoadley of Southern Pines finished one shot back at one over par 217.

Courtney Taylor of Gastonia scored a hat track winning the girls’ division for the third straight year.  Taylor, a high school senior who has committed to play golf for UNC-Greensboro, came from behind to finish with a total of 231.  Finishing tied for second two shots back were Allison Emrey of Charlotte and Laura Wearn of Charlotte.

In the boys’ 12-13 division, Victor Wiggins of Gastonia defeated Drew Johnson of Oak Ridge on the fifth playoff hole.  Both players finished at four under par 212.  Skottowe Smith of Charlotte won the boys’ 11 and under division by an impressive four shots.

This junior championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.

TAYLOR GOES FOR 3RD STRAIGHT VICTORY IN DOGWOOD STATE JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

WEST END, NC (8/18/08) - Courtney Taylor of Gastonia will be shooting for her third straight victory when the 4th Dogwood State Junior Championship for North Carolina boys and girls is played August 19-21 at Gaston Country Club in her hometown.

Taylor, currently ranked No. 4 among North Carolina girls, won this title in 2006 at Bermuda Run CC and last year on High Point CC's Willow Creek course. Potential threats to a Taylor three-peat could come from Katherine Perry of Cary, who is ranked third among N.C. junior girls, from seventh-ranked Katie Kirk of Davidson, from eighth-ranked Jessica Hook of Wilmington and from 10th-ranked Sarah Bae of Raleigh.

In the boys' division, neither Ben Kohles of Cary, who won by eight strokes, nor runnerup Will Almond, also of Cary, is entered this year. That may leave the favorite's role to Justin Clement of Lexington, NC, who is the No. 2 ranked junior in North Carolina behind Kohles. Also in this year's field are sixth-ranked Robert Hoadley of Southern Pines, seventh-ranked Michael Marshburn of Cary and eighth-ranked John Conners of Apex.

Another player to watch is Zachary McKelvey of Rutherfordton, who posted a 69 to pace the sectional qualifying event at Pine Island CC in Charlotte on Aug. 11. McKelvey was best among the 31 successful qualifiers from a field of 92 golfers.

The Carolinas Golf Association event is a 54-hole stroke competition for boys in the 14-15 and 16-18 age divisions and the girls' division. Boys ages 11 and under will engage in 27 holes of stroke play. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the low half and ties in each division except for the youngest boys' division, in which there is no cut.

Gaston Country Club's Ellis Maples-designed course, which opened in 1958, was refurbished by architect Kris Spence in 2003-2004.

This is the 9th time the club has hosted a Carolinas Golf Association championship.

The course will play at 6,917 yards for the older boys, at 5,880 yards for the 12-13 year-old boys and the girls division and at 5,283 yards for the 11-and-under boys.

GASTON COUNTRY CLUB INFORMATION

HEAD PROFESSIONAL: Mike Taylor

COURSE SUPERINTENDENT: Tim Carpenter

TYPE COURSE: Private

ARCHITECT: Ellis Maples (Restoration by Kris Spence in 2003-2004)

OPENED: 1958

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Architect Kris Spence's restoration project included the reshaping and rebuilding of greens and tees, repositioning bunkers to bring them back into play, and reworking several holes to bring back the original characteristics that legendary architect Ellis Maples intended when he designed the course in 1958. The restoration also added about 200 yards of length to the course from the back tees and about 150 yards from both the blue tees and white tees. Properly placed bunkering brings the "risk-reward" factor into play. Golfers must use strategic shot placement in order to take advantage of the great angles for the approach shot into the greens.

YARDAGE & PAR:

The following yardages will be used in each age division:

Girls division - 5,880 yards, par 72

11-and-under division - 5,283, par 72
