RIESEN AND CHAUNCEY WINS CGA'S 13th N.C. FOUR-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP

SUNSET BEACH, N.C. (11/2/08) – UNC-Chapel Hill college golfers Robert Riesen of Pinehurst and Philip Chauncey of Durham took the North Carolina Four-Ball amateur golf title Sunday at Ocean Ridge Plantation.  The duo followed up a scorching 61 Saturday with a closing 67 Sunday for a 195 total, 21 under par, and a two-shot victory.

Riesen, a senior, and Chauncey, a sophomore, were playing a “mediocre round” when Riesen shanked a shot on the 14th hole, which the team bogeyed.  “After that, we got hot,” Riesen said.  They went birdie-eagle to hold off the charging tandem of Paul Daniel of Winston-Salem and Uly Grisette of Clemmons, who closed with 61—197.  Daniel and Grisette birdied the last four holes.

“We played really well Saturday and just well enough today to win,” Chauncey said.

Chris Eaves of Burgaw and Brent Parrish of Clinton took third place with 66-201, 15 under par.

The championship is open to male amateur golfers in North Carolina and attracted a starting field of 72 two-man teams.  The event is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.

DEAN AND RAY EXPECTED BACK TO DEFEND IN CGA'S 13th N.C. FOUR-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP

WEST END, NC (10/28/08) - Bobby Dean and Anthony Ray of the Charlotte area will be back to defend their title when the 13th North Carolina Four-Ball Championship is played at Ocean Ridge Plantation in Sunset Beach, Oct. 31-Nov. 2.

The 54-hole Carolinas Golf Association championship will be staged on both the Tim Cate-designed Panther's Run and Willard Byrd-designed Lion's Paw courses at Ocean Ridge Plantation. After the competitors play one round on each course over the first two days, the field will be trimmed to the low 30 teams and ties for the final round on the Panther's Run layout. Panther's Run will play at 6,940 yards (par 72), while Lion's Paw measures 6,903 yards (par 72).

Last year's rain-plagued championship at Foxfire Village in the North Carolina Sandhills was won by Dean and Anthony, who posted a last-day 62 to win by three strokes over a trio of runnerup squads. Because of heavy rain, the first round was washed out and forced the CGA to come up with an alternate format. The field was split into two qualifiers the second day, with half the field playing the East Course and half playing the West Course. Those who survived the qualifying started the last day all even, with Dean and Anthony's 62 an easy winner.

Dean and Ray are among 74 teams entered in this year's four-ball stroke play competition.

Ocean Ridge Plantation was the site of the Carolinas Mixed Team Championship in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
