CARTER JENKINS WINS 12TH NC BOYS' 13 AND UNDER CHAMPIONSHIP

Asheboro, NC (7/15/08) - Carter Jenkins of Raleigh battled through four tough matches to win the 13th NC Junior Boys’ 13 and Under Championship on the Donald Ross designed Asheboro GC in Asheboro, NC.  Jenkins defeated Drew Johnson of Oak Ridge, 3&1 in the championship match.  Johnson took an early one up lead through six holes, but Jenkins then rallied and was three up after a tap in birdie on the par 5 13th hole.  Johnson won the 14th with a birdie two sinking a 15 footer to get back to two down.  Both the 15th and 16th holes were halved and Jenkins won the 17th to take the match, 3&1.  Finishing in third place was Carter Page of Waynesville defeating Christian Cichan of Charlotte, 3&2.

The other flight winners were:  Ben Dietrich of Conover, William Blalock of Gastonia, Andy Simmons of Charlotte, Anthony Perrino of Mooresville, Hunter McCombs of Morganton and Scott Adams of Asheville.

This annual junior championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.

60 YOUNGSTERS TO COMPETE FOR TITLE IN 12TH N.C. BOYS 13 & UNDER CHAMPIONSHIP

WEST END, NC (7/14/08) -- A field of 60 youngsters will compete in the 12th North Carolina Boys 13 & Under Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association, which will be played July 14-15 at Asheboro Golf Course.

The youngsters will play an 18-hole stroke-play qualifying round on July 14 to determine match play flights and seedings. The top 16 scorers will qualify for the championship flight, which will have four rounds of match play -- the first three matches covering 9 holes and the championship match, 18 holes.

The Boys 13 & Under competition was previously part of the CGA's North Carolina Junior Championship, but because of an ever-increasing number of entries, the division for boys ages 14 through 17 was being cut back to make room for the younger players. The 13 & Under division was played as a stand-alone championship for the first time last summer at Asheboro GC.

Victor Wiggins of Gastonia, who lost to 2007 Davis Womble by a 2 & 1 margin in the title match, will be back this year to make another run at the championship.

The tournament will be played on a 73-year-old course designed by legendary architect Donald Ross. It will play at 5,520 yards with a par of 70 for the youngsters.

CAROLINAS GOLF ASSOCIATION'S N.C. BOYS 13 & UNDER CHAMPIONSHIP RETURNING TO ASHEBORO MUNICIPAL GOLF COURSE, JULY 14-15

WEST END, NC (7/9/08) - The North Carolina Boys 13 & Under Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association is returning to Asheboro Golf Club, July 14-15.

Davis Womble of High Point, who won the 2007 championship, isn't entered this time around, but Victor Wiggins of Gastonia, who lost to Womble by a 2 & 1 margin in the title match, will be back.

The CGA received 62 entries for the match play competition, which was 12 more than it received last year. The youngsters will play an 18-hole stroke-play qualifying round on July 14 to determine match play flights and seedings. The top 16 scorers will qualify for the championship flight, which will have four rounds of match play -- the first three matches covering 9 holes and the championship match, 18 holes.

The city-owned nine-hole course, designed by legendary architect Donald Ross and opened in 1935, will play at 5,520 yards with a par of 70 for the youngsters.

Womble Wins!!!!

Asheboro, NC—Davis Womble just keeps on winning on every level in Carolinas Golf Association’s junior events.  Womble of High Point defeated Victor Wiggins of Gastonia 3&1 to capture the NC Boys’ 13 and Under Championship on the Donald Ross designed Asheboro Golf Club.  In the 18 holes final, Wiggins, the number 16 seed, was 2 up after 11 holes, but a string of 4 bogeys gave Womble a 2 up lead after 15 holes.  After having the sixteenth hole, Womble then birdied the seventeenth hole to close out Wiggins and captured the championship.

Other flight winners were Trey Guy of Fayetteville in the second flight, Alex Lee of Salisbury in the third flight, Jacob Haithcock of Burlington, Troy Beaver of Salisbury and Camden Weis of High Point.
