CLEMENT AND HAMMOND CAPTURE NORTH CAROLINA JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES

Greenville, NC (6/20/08) – Justin Clement of Lexington must not like the 18th hole at Bradford Creek GC in Greenville, NC.  Clement, a rising high school senior, avoided playing the final hole in all of his matches on his way to becoming the champion of the 41st NC Junior Boy’s Championship.  Clement started fast and end quickly in his semi finals match defeating Will Shearin of Selma, 7&5 and then captured his first CGA junior championship by defeating Mitchell McGlamery of Morganton, 3&2.  McGlamery, also a rising high school senior, advanced to the championship match by defeating John Conners of Apex, 4&2.

“I was just hoping to make it past the first round of match play”, stated Clement.  “The best of the best were here, and I never thought I would make it this far.”

In the championship match, Clement birdie 6 holes and had no bogeys.  In the end, it was too much fire power for McGlamery who displayed a hot putter all week, but the putts would not fall in the final match.

Hayley Hammond of Mooresville captured the 12th NC Junior Girls’ Championship defeating Jessica Hook of Wilmington, 2&1.  Hammond, a rising high school senior, birdied Bradford Creek GC’s 16th hole to take a one up lead and then closed out the championship match on the 17th with a two-putt par.

“The pressure of match play is very intense”, said Hammond. “I was 3 up through 11, but Jessica chipped away at my lead to get it back to even after 15 holes.  I was shaking I was so nervous and was ready to get the match over with, one way or another.”

Hammond will be invited to compete on the Carolinas Girls’ team in the Mid-Atlantic Challenge at Danville GC in Danville, VA the first weekend in August.

This junior championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.

HOADLEY CHASES SECOND STRAIGHT VICTORY IN N.C. JUNIOR AT BRADFORD CREEK, JUNE 17-20

Robert Hoadley is the defending champion, the 2006 runner-up and is currently No. 2 in the N.C. Junior Boys' rankings. Michael McGowan, son of former PGA Tour player Pat McGowan, is the No. 1 ranked junior boy in the Tar Heel state. Andy Knox of Cary, the 2007 runner-up to Hoadley, also could be a contender.

Poston of Hickory, whose 69 led the 34 players who survived an 18-hole qualifier at Statesville CC on June 12, and Johnny Kyger of Salisbury, Coalter Paxton IV of Wilson and Ryan Yarbrough of Wilson, whose 70s were best among the 22 successful qualifiers at Cardinal CC in Selma on June 12.

A new champion will be crowned in the girls' division since Eleana Collins of Pinehurst, who won the title the last two years, is now at the University of Virginia. Favored to succeed Collins is Courtney Taylor of Gastonia, who is the 2nd-ranked girl in the N.C. Junior rankings.

Collins Successfully Defends Girls' Title at 40th NC Junior

Hoadley Wins Boys Crown

State Road, NC (6/22/07) —Showing very little nerves, Eleana Collins of Pinehurst successfully defended her title winning the 2007 N.C. Junior Girls Championship.  Collins, a rising high school senior, defeated Lauren Smith of Salisbury 6&4 in the championship match.  Collins carded 3 birdies and no bogeys in her match on the Ellis Maples designed Cedarbrook CC course.

By winning the NC Junior Girls’ Championship, Collins will be invited to compete on the Carolinas Junior Girls’ team in the Mid-Atlantic Challenge at CC of North Carolina in Pinehurst on August 4 – 5, 2007.

If at first you do not succeed, try try again.  That is the attitude Robert Hoadley used to win the 2007 NC Junior Boys’ Championship.  After losing in the championship match in 2006, Hoadley of Southern Pines defeated Andy Knox of Cary 1up to win his first CGA major championship.  Hoadley, a 16 year old rising high school junior at Union Pines High School in Carthage, defeated Tommy Gibson 3&2 to advance to the finals match.  Knox, a 14 year old rising high school sophomore at Apex High School defeated Bo Andrews of Raleigh 2&1.  Knox won the NC Junior Boys’ 13 and under championship in 2006.

Both boys will be invited to participate on the Carolinas Junior Team in the Carolinas – Virginias Junior Team matches at Boonsboro CC in Lynchburg, VA on August 18 – 19, 2007.  This will be Hoadley second year on the Carolinas junior team.

This annual junior championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
