STRAWN AND JACKSON SUCCESSFULLY DEFEND TITLE AT N.C. SENIOR FOUR-BALL Rocky Mount, NC (8/7/08) - In true ham and egg fashion David Strawn and Logan Jackson successfully defended their NC Senior Four-Ball title. Numerous times "when one of us had a tough par putt, the other was out of the hole", said David. Their final round 68 was the low score of the day and gave them a one stroke win over the teams of Burris-Aldridge and Watterworth-Powell. Strawn and Jackson praised the Donald Ross creation as "extremely difficult but fair." Strawn made a lengthy putt on the first hole for their only bogey but made three birdies with Logan adding two more for their 4-under effort. This marks the first time a team has won this event twice though Strawn won the 2005 championship with Woody Green of Linville, NC.
CGA'S N.C. SENIOR FOUR-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP AGAIN ON A DONALD ROSS COURSE, AUG. 5-7 WEST END, NC (8/4/08) - It somehow seems appropriate that the aging fellows entered in the North Carolina Senior Four-Ball Championship will be competing for the second straight year on a grand old golf course designed by legendary architect Donald Ross. The 8th N.C. Senior Four-Ball, a 54-hole championship, will be contested Aug. 5-7 at Benvenue Country Club in Rocky Mount, NC. Built in 1922, the original golf course had 18 holes with sand greens. The greens, which were converted to grass in 1946, require "greens reading ability" due to the small saucer-like putting surfaces that are typical of a Ross design. Benvenue's par 72 course will play at 6,463 yards for the seniors, all of whom are age 55 or older. Last year, the tournament was played in Morganton at Mimosa Hills Golf & Country Club, a 1929 Ross creation. Logan Jackson of Winston-Salem and David Strawn of Charlotte won the championship, combining to shoot a 24-under-par 192. They won by a stroke over Ron Carpenter of Durham and Ernie Newton of High Point, who are also entered this year. Also expected back are 2006 champions Bob Desjardins of Matthews and Bill Boles of Wilson, who finished third last year. Lea Couch Jr. of Bahama and Donald Slater of Durham, the 2004 winners, are entered as well. The field of 54 teams will be cut to the low 30 teams and ties after 36 holes. The front nine is comparatively "open" with few trees but all greens are well trapped. The back nine has more trees and penalty ditches and is longer than the front nine. The course layout demands accurate tee shots, exact iron play and good putting skills because of the speedy, undulating bentgrass greens.
