SIMSON AND DETWEILER WIN 40TH CAROLINAS SENIOR FOUR-BALL Wilmington, NC – Final round results of the 40th Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by the Country Club of Landfall, Nicklaus course (Marsh-Ocean), in Wilmington, NC on Thursday, April 10, 2008. (6450 yards, par 36-36—72). Paul Simson and Don Detweiler of Raleigh, NC shot a two-under par 70 total to win the 40th Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Championship. The victory marks the 17th CGA title for Simson and first for Detweiler. This was Simson’s first Senior Four-Ball title. Detweiler had a little local knowledge as he is the reigning Country Club of Landfall club champion. “We did not make a bogey for the 3 days,” Simson said. “We played really great together. I did well pairing-up with the club champion.” “It was really special for me to have a partner as good and classy as Paul,” noted Detweiler. Finishing one-shot out was Lex Alexander of Chapel Hill, NC and Bill Boles of Wilson, NC. Alexander and Boles’ round of 69 jumped them into second place. Logan Jackson of Winston-Salem, NC and Bill Palmer of Bluffton, SC briefly held the lead during the final round. But a five-over par stretch during the last 10 holes dropped them into a 4th place finish. Defending champions Joe Padgette of North Charleston, SC and Bill Smunk of Kingstree, SC finished in a tie for 24th place. This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
DEFENDING CHAMPIONS HOPING FOR MORE 'BREAKFAST' IN CGA SR. FOUR-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP AT CC OF LANDFALL WEST END, NC (4/5/08) -- South Carolinians Joe Padgette and Bill Smunk are hoping to put together another successful breakfast menu when the 40th Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Championship is played at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, NC, April 8-10. Trailing by one stroke last April at The Windermere Club near Columbia, the duo from Bulls Bay Golf Club in Awendaw, SC "ham and egged" their way to a four-under-par 68 that lifted them to a two-stroke victory over a trio of runner-up teams. They birdied four of the last seven holes to win this championship for amateur golfers ages 55 and over. "The next thing I knew, we were being handed the trophies," said Smunk, an insuranceman from Kingstree, SC. Smunk and Padgette combined for 66-67-68--201, a 15 under par total that was only one stroke off the 54-hole tournament record set in 2004. Padgette and Smunk can expect plenty of competition as they try to defend their title. Among the teams in the 2008 starting field are Ron Carpenter of Durham, NC and Ernie Newton from High Point, NC, who won the championship in 2006; Vic Hannon of Camden, SC and Jim Patti of Bluffton, SC, the 2004 winners; and Bob Stringer of Blythewood, SC and Leroy Rabon of Chapin, SC, who won back in 2000. Hannon and Patti tied for second in 2007, along with Arnold Edwards and Doug Buchanan of Charlotte, NC, who are also entered this year. The 54-hole tournament will be played on the Jack Nicklaus-designed Marsh and Ocean nines at the CC of Landfall. The course will be set up at 6,364 yards for the field of 88 teams.
