Professionals Try for 8th Straight Victory in Tar Heel Cup Matches

WEST END, NC (3/31/08) - North Carolina golf professionals will be chasing their eighth straight victory and their 12th overall when they compete against top North Carolina amateurs in the 14th Tar Heel Cup Matches March 31-April 1 at Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst, NC.

The Ryder Cup type competition, which is jointly conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association and the Carolinas PGA Section, is being played at Pinewild for the fifth time, and for the third time on the club's Gene Hamm-designed Magnolia course.

The Tar Heel Cup Matches have been dominated 11-2 by the professionals, who pulled out a rolled to a 22 1/2 to 10 1/2 victory last year at nearby Pine Neeldes Lodge and Golf Club. It was their seventh straight victory, with the only losses coming in 2000 and in the 1995 inaugural match.

Amateur Paul Simson of Raleigh, the 2005 CGA Player of the Year and the association's Senior Player of the Year for the past two years, will become the only player to compete in all 14 Tar Heel Cup matches.

The Tar Heel Cup format is one day of Four-Ball matches and one day of Singles matches. Scoring is on the Nassau system with three points at stake in each match -- one point for winning the front nine, one point for winning the back nine and one point for winning the overall 18. The event is sponsored by Golfnet, Inc., the CGA handicap provider

Pinewild's Magnolia course, designed by architect Gene Hamm, opened in 1989 and was re-designed in 2006-07. The course has previously hosted six CGA major events -- the 1991 Carolinas Amateur, the 1992, 1994 and 1995 Carolinas Father-Son and the 1995 and 2005 Tar Heel Cup matches. Two other Tar Heel Cup matches were played on the club's Holly course.
