PATTY MOORE SUCCESSFULLY DEFENDS WOMEN'S MATCH PLAY TITLE Stanley, NC (7/17/08) - Final results of the 11th Carolinas Women's Match Play Championship hosted by Cowans Ford Country Club in Stanley, NC on Thursday, July 17, 2008. Par 36-36-72, 5825 yards. The two senior women left in the field prevailed and advanced on into the final round of the 11th Carolinas Women's Match Play Championship on Thursday. Defending champion Patty Moore of Charlotte, NC faced off against 17-year-old Laura Wearn also of Charlotte, NC in her first match of the day. Moore came out strong winning the first two holes but Wearn fought back and found herself even after a few more holes of play. But Moore's steady play and Wearn's shaky putter helped Moore win by a 4&2 margin and earn another trip into the finals. 50-year-old Maggie Weder of Greenville, NC faced a tougher opponent in Brittany Beltran of Kannapolis, NC. Their match was back and forth all day with the two trading pars and birdies throughout the morning. "The match came down to the last putt on the last hole," said Weder. "Brittany really wore me out mentally." Weder, who is a former US Marine and battles with M.S., went onto face Moore in the finals. Moore again started out strong and stuck her approach shot to 4 feet and drained her birdie putt with confidence. The two also went head to head throughout the afternoon and traded the lead until Weder made double after hitting her drive into the hazard on the ninth hole. Moore would found herself 2 up heading to the back nine. Moore would then go 3 up after 11 holes and Weder had to dig deep inside herself to fight back. "I really wanted this win for myself today," said Weder. Moore would make a double on the par-4 13th hole after a three putt to go 2 up on Weder heading into fourteen. "Every time Maggie would stand over a putt I would be swallowing hard," Moore said. Both players would tie fourteen and fifteen. Weder hit a great drive on the 16th hole to allow her to reach the 378 yard par 4 in regulation while Moore's approach found the greenside bunker and she failed to get up and down. Weder felt like she never gave up and she had a great chance to actually win her first CGA championship title. Moore had a chance to close out Weder on the 17th hole but she failed to make her par putt which extended the match to the 18th hole. This was the first time all week that Moore would have to play the par 5 18th. Moore's wedge shot would come within four feet of the flagstick and she made her birdie putt for the 2 up victory. "What a great match this was," said Moore. "It was a lot of fun and I am proud to have defended my title." In the tournament division, Lu Hauser of Conover, NC won over Gwen Gore of Denver, NC by a 7&6 margin. The tournament division plays a shorter course. This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association. Championship Semifinals Patty Moore, Charlotte, NC def. Laura Wearn, Charlotte, NC, 4&2 Maggie Weder, Greenville, NC def. CGA'S 11TH CAROLINAS WOMEN'S MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP RETURNS TO COWANS FORD CC IN STANLEY, NC, JULY 15-17 WEST END, NC (7/9/08) -- The Carolinas Women's Match Play Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association returns to Cowans Ford Country Club in Stanley, NC, for the third straight year July 15-17. Last year, veteran Patty Moore of Charlotte scored a 3 & 2 victory over Taylor Barrett of York, SC in the final match. Moore will be back to defend her title. The field will compete in an 18-hole qualifying round on Tuesday, July 15th, with the players divided into flights by score for match play. PATTY MOORE WINS CAROLINAS WOMEN'S MATCH PLAY CROWN FOR FIRST TIME Stanley, NC (7/12/07) -- Final Round Results of the 9th Carolinas Women's Amateur Match Play Championship hosted by Cowans Ford Country Club in Stanley, NC on July 12, 2007. Par 36-36--72, 5936 yards. The chatter among the membership at Cowans Ford Country Club prior to the semi-final matches were to begin was that Patty Moore of Charlotte, NC would have her hands full and a big challenge ahead of her when she would face local favorite, Chris Brady of Stanley, NC. Unfortunately for Brady, 57-year-old Patty Moore silenced that chatter when she went on into the finals by defeating Brady by a 4 & 3 margin. The match seemed to be pretty close through the first nine holes when Brady chipped in from off the green to take the match to all square but Moore made a great birdie putt on hole ten to go one-up. That birdie putt would prove to be the momentum shift that Moore needed to seal the deal and head on into the finals. In the second semi-final match Kristen Vincent of Burlington, NC faced off against Taylor Barrett of York, SC. Vincent was two-up at the turn but after Barrett won ten and eleven the match became all square heading into number fourteen. Both girls made a good par and they moved onto the 515 yard par-5 with a deep hazard in front of the green. Barrett hit her second shot into the hazard. Vincent felt the door was wide open but her pitch found the hazard in front of the green and in the end Barrett found herself one-up heading into sixteen. Vincent had her chance to close out the match on eighteen but missed a putt to send it into extra holes where Barrett hit her approach shot to five feet for birdie and the trip into the finals where she faced the tough senior. Just as in the semi-final match Moore never had a bogey all day. "I really think not having any bogey's all day really helped me win. I was pretty much putting for birdie on every hole which was a big plus against my opponents." The 57-year old Moore who is a retired P.E. teacher from Texas has won so many CGA championships but has never won this CGA women's major. "I am a tough old bird," stated Moore, "I must admit this is pretty fun for me and it feels great to still be so competitive against these young girls." Moore is again well on her way to earn CGA Senior Women's Player of the Year honors yet again and even possibly the CGA Women's Player of the Year award as well which would be a remarkable feat which she has accomplished before. JARMAN SEEKING END OF HER RUNNERUP STREAK IN CAROLINAS WOMEN'S MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP, JULY 10-12 WEST END, NC (7/5/07) -- After settling for runner-up finishes three times in the past four years, Wilmington golfer Michelle Jarman is hoping to change her luck when the Carolinas Women's Match Play Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association makes a return visit to Cowans Ford Country Club in Stanley, NC, July 10-12. In 2003, Jarman was edged on the first extra hole of the championship match by Adrienne Millican of Fuquay-Varina, NC; in 2005, she bowed to Whitney Simons of Aiken, SC, 4 & 3 in the title match; and last year, when the championship was played at Cowans Ford for the first time, Lauren Hunt of Little River, SC scored a 5 & 4 victory in the scheduled 18-hole final. Although Millican, Simons and Hunt are not entered this year, Jarman's ascension to the Women's Match Play crown will nonetheless be a difficult task. Among the 24 players playing from the championship tees are 1999 champion Pat Brogden of Garner, NC and 16-year-old Courtney Taylor of Gastonia, NC, who recently won the Carolinas Junior Girls' Championship, which was also contested at match play. The field will compete in an 18-hole qualifying round on Tuesday, July 10th, with the players divided into flights by score for match play.
