Starting Time

Please check the enclosed pairing sheet for your starting time on Monday, May 19.  Remember that local qualifying is 18 holes, that you must walk in all phases of the championship and that you are responsible for providing your own caddie.  Caddies will NOT be available at Duke University Golf Club. Players may carry their own bag during the qualifying round. Caddies will be allowed to rent a cart for the qualifying round at this site. However, caddies may have to share carts during the qualifying round.

USGA Policies

The USGA prohibits the use of cellular phones during qualifying and championship rounds.  Also, the USGA does not allow spectator carts during qualifying rounds or the championship proper. Traditional metal spikes are not allowed.  The penalty for non-compliance is disqualification. The "One-Ball" rule will be in effect. USGA Hard Card rules sheet is available online at:

Locker Room: Players will have access to the men's locker room.

Dress Code: Shirts must have collars, shorts are allowed but must be Bermuda length, and no denim. Policy is for both players and caddies.

Practice Round/Cart Fees/Food and Beverage

You are entitled to one practice round on May 15 (all day) or May 18 (after 12:00pm when tee times are available). There is a mandatory $20.00 cart/range fee for the practice round. You may begin calling the Duke University GC golf shop on May 8 to schedule a practice round tee time. Make sure to identify yourself as a U.S. Open Championship qualifying participant. It would be helpful if you make your own game before calling. Play the Black tees during your practice round (7105 yards). Cart fee for caddies on May 19 is $20.00 and includes player’s range fee. There is a $10.00 range fee for players and caddies that walk during the qualifying round. Make sure to check-in with the golf shop when you arrive and pay your appropriate fees! Any player failing to pay appropriate cart and range fees will be reported to the USGA. Duke University GC accepts cash, MasterCard, Visa and American Express for cart/range fees, golf shop purchases, and food and beverage.

TBA qualifying spots and 2 alternate positions. The number of qualifying spots will be updated at www.carolinasgolf.org. There are 121 competitors in the field.

Course Yardage (Course Rating: 73.9/141) Note: Yardage is subject to change.

Lodging is available at the Washington Duke Inn (800-443-3853). Hotel is located adjacent to Duke University GC. Discounted rate for U.S. Open qualifying participants is $139.00 + tax. Call the hotel directly and identify yourself with the U.S. Open qualifier (or Group #161768) to receive the discounted rate or you may book online at www.washingtondukeinn.com, select Groups in top header in the reservation screen and enter group #161768 in the Attendee Code field.

Qualifying Schedule

Thursday, May 15               Course open for practice (all day).

Sunday, May 18                   Limited number of afternoon practice round times available. Call golf shop in advance to schedule a tee time.

Monday, May 19                  Qualifying round: 18 holes of stroke play. Playoffs for qualifying spots and alternates immediately following play.

Directions to Duke University Golf Club and Hotel

From Raleigh/Southeast: coming west on Interstate 40, turn North on 147. Go eight miles to the junction with NC 15-501. Take the exit for south 15-501/Chapel Hill. Go two more miles to the Duke University/751 exit. Turn left off the exit ramp onto 751/Cameron Boulevard. Go one mile to the third light (Science Drive) and turn right into the Golf Course/Washington Duke Inn parking lot. Go around the Inn to the right for the bag drop-off.

From Chapel Hill/Southwest: Coming north/east on 15/501, exit at Duke University/751. Turn right off the exit ramp onto 751/Cameron Boulevard. Go one mile to the second light (Science Drive) and turn right into the Golf Course/Washington Duke Inn parking lot. Go around the Inn to the right for the bag drop-off.

From Greensboro/Northwest: Take 85 South to the NC 147 exit. Continue on 147 for two miles then exit onto 15/501 south toward Chapel Hill. Go two more miles to the Duke University/751 exit. Turn left off the exit ramp onto 751/Cameron Boulevard. Go one mile to the third light (Science Drive) and turn right into the Golf Course/Washington Duke Inn parking lot. Go around the Inn to the right for the bag drop-off.

Pace of Play Policy

A player who is discovered taking more than 40 seconds is subject to a warning and will be so advised.  The player will be notified that exceeding 40 seconds on one more occasion will result in a penalty of one stroke.  A third violation will result in a two stroke penalty, followed by disqualification. A player’s time to play begins when he has had a reasonable opportunity to reach his ball and when it is the player’s turn to play and can do so without interference or distraction.  Penalties are applied individually, but more than one competitor in a group may be penalized.
