Carolinas
Golf Association Begins Celebration of 100 Years in
Existence
West End,
N.C. (10/28/08) – The Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)
kicks off a year long Centennial celebration on
Tuesday, October, 28.
The CGA was organized on October 28, 1909 in
Charleston, SC. It was organized by golfers from
Sans Souci (now Greenville Country Club in SC),
Ridgewood in Columbia, SC (now Columbia Country
Club), Cape Fear Country Club in Wilmington, NC, the
Country Club of Charleston and Georgetown (a South
Carolina club no longer in existence). The four
existing clubs are still members of the CGA today.
As part of its Cen tennial
anniversary,
the CGA, one of the nation’s oldest and the second
largest golf association in the country, will
release “Golf in the Carolinas”
written by renowned golf author, Lee Pace. The book
is a celebration of golf and 100 years of golf
history in the Carolinas, coinciding with the first
100 years of the Carolinas Golf Association and will
be available in December 2008. The book may be
ordered from the association’s web site
www.carolinasgolf.org or by calling 910-673-1000.
The CGA will also host the CGA Annual Meeting
and
Centennial Dinner at the Pinehurst (NC) Resort’s
Carolina Hotel on Friday, February 13, 2009. David
Fay, Executive Director of the USGA, will be the
featured speaker. Past Carolinas Amateur champions,
players of the year, special guests and CGA members
will also be in attendance. Contact the CGA office
for further information.
A CGA Centennial logo will be used throughout the
year on correspondence, CGA web site and at
tournaments and championships. A section on the web
site will also be devoted completely to the CGA
Centennial. Other events also will be planned
throughout the year.
“We are excited to share this milestone with our
membership,” said Lawrence C. Hicks, CGA Centennial
Chairman and Executive Committee member. “We
couldn’t be this successful without the strong
support of our members and golfers. They are
responsible for our success and we look forward to
serving them for the next 100 years.” CGA helped to pioneer and
preserve the game of golf in the Carolinas and
continues to provide service to the game in South
Carolina and North Carolina through championships
and tournaments, handicapping, course/slope rating,
agronomy, interclub play, the Carolinas Golf
Foundation and overseeing a variety of programs and
services to its membership with over 180,000 members
in more than 720
member clubs.
