Camden, SC (5/10/09) - Uncle and nephew Walter and Thomas
Todd of Laurens, SC overcame some last minute struggles to capture the Carolinas
Four Ball Championship at Camden Country Club by a 1-up margin
The Todds defeated qualifying medalists Scott Harvey of
Greensboro, NC and Patrick Brady of Reidsville, NC by a slim 1-up lead.
The Todds walked to the 17th tee with a 2-up lead but lost to
a par on 17 before Thomas coolly holed a 16 footer for par on 18 to halve the
hole and win the match.
Walter, a former champion in the Carolinas Mid-Amateur and
the South Carolina Mid Amateurs was pleased with his younger partner's nerves.
"Thomas certainly bailed out his choking uncle", said Walter
alluding to Thomas' clutch putts on 16 and 18. "I left him hanging out there too
many times coming in".
Thomas holed out shots from off the green on 1, 2 and 16. He
also holed the winning putt.
Brady and Harvey were vying to become the first qualifying
medalists to win the championship since 1998. They never led during the match
and fell 2 down after a Thomas Todd eagle on 14 and a Walter Todd tap in birdie
on 15.
This makes the third runner up finish for Brady ('92, '93
'09) in this event. The first two came with partner Mike Goodes.

WEST END, NC (4/27/09) -- Camden Country Club is well known
for its short, but exceedingly demanding golf course, which was re-designed in
the late 1920s by renowned golf course designer/architect Donald Ross. The
6,358-yard, par-70 layout is one of the Carolinas' most challenging tests of
golfing skills.
Camden Country Club is also known as the regular venue for
the Carolinas Four-Ball Championship, which has been played on the club's course
52 times in the Carolinas Golf Association event's 57-year history. The 53rd
visit to Camden comes May 6-10 when the CGA conducts the championship for the
58th time. The only occasions when the championship was played elsewhere came in
1952 when it was conducted at Wilson (NC) Country Club, 1953 at the CC of
Spartanburg, SC, 1968 and 1985 at Red Fox CC in Tryon, NC and 2000 at Florence
(SC) CC.
A year ago at Camden, USC-Upstate teammates Baxter Culler of
Hartsville, SC and Josh Gallman of Gaffney, SC scored a 1-up victory over
Harrison Moore of Orangeburg, SC and Allen Koon of Anderson, SC in the scheduled
18-hole championship match.
This year's field has a number of former champions, including
Culler and Gallman. Brothers Robert and David Dargan of Columbia, the 2006
winners, are back; as are Frank Ford III of Charleston and Jim Burgess of
Kingstree, SC, who became the only four-time winners in the event's history with
victories in 1985, '87, '90 and '92. Joe Hendrick of Chesterfield, SC and Daran
Womack of Aiken, SC, who won in 1999, are also entered.
The championship begins May 6 with the first round of a
36-hole qualifier. After the second round of four-ball stroke play qualifying on
May 7, the field is cut to the low 32 teams for match play. After four rounds of
match play over the next two days, the championship match will be played on
Sunday, May 10.
In addition to its many Carolinas Four-Ball Championships,
Camden CC also hosted the 1985 Carolinas Amateur Championship, the 2003 CGA
Pro-Amateur Club Championship, the 2005 Carolinas Senior Amateur Championship
and the 2006 SC Match Play Championship.
