Carolinas Wins 64th Carolinas-Virginias Team Matches

WILMINGTON, N.C. (10/17/09) –– The 24-golfer Carolinas squad posted a seven-point victory in final-day singles matches against their Virginias counterparts to score a 31-17 triumph  as the 64th Virginias-Carolinas Team Matches concluded today at Eagle Point Golf Club.

Possessors of a seven-point advantage following the first day, Carolinas registered a 15½-8½ triumph in singles’ action, the identical margin the team held following first day four-ball and foursome matches. On the last day, Carolinas regulars won singles matches by five points (10½-5½), while the squad’s seniors were 5-3 victors.

Over the two days of matches, Carolinas outscored Virginias’ regulars by 10 points (21-11), while the host’s seniors held the advantage, 10-6.

For Virginias’ seniors in singles, Suffolk residents Bobby Bleiler and J.P. Leigh scored victories in matches three and four. But Carolinas answered to win three of the final four seniors’ matches, with Gary Brown (Charlotte, N.C.), Ron Carpenter (Creedmoor, N.C.) and Frank Ford (Charleston, S.C.) scoring wins. Richmond’s Vinny Giles, the 2009 USGA Senior Amateur champion, scored Virginias’ only victory in matches 5-8 in senior singles’ encounters.

In the 16 matches among the regulars, the two teams earned two-and-a-half points in the first five singles matches. Carolinas, though, surged ahead in a five-match span, Nos. 6-10, owning a 4-1 advantage in that stretch. For Carolinas, Jarrett Grimes (Columbia, S.C.), Uly Grisette (Clemmons, N.C.), Scott Harvey (Greensboro, N.C.) and Paul Simson (Raleigh, N.C.) notched victories during that decisive run.

Virginias won three of the four matches in encounters 11-14, with Allen Barber (Yorktown, Va.), Jeffrey Topp (Fairfax, Va.) and Dustin Groves (Keswick, Va.) coming away with wins.

But Carolinas finished off their triumph by scoring victories in the final two matches, with Todd Hendley (Simpsonville, S.C.) and Steve Liebler (Irmo, S.C.) posting concluding victories.

Carolinas leads the all-time series 46-17-1, but the matches are tied 4-4-0 in the last eight meetings dating back to 2002. Carolinas has won the past three meetings in matches played on North Carolina or South Carolina soil going back to 2005; the matches annually rotate between sites in the Virginias and the Carolinas.

64th CAROLINAS-VIRGINIAS TEAM MATCHES SLATED OCT. 16-17

WEST END, NC (10/15/09)  The Carolinas Golf Association squad will try to start a new winning streak when the 64th Carolinas-Virginias Team Matches are played at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, NC, Oct. 16-17.

The Team Matches are a Ryder Cup-like event featuring a 24-man team of top regular and senior amateur players from North and South Carolina against their counterparts from Virginia and West Virginia. The matches, conducted jointly by the Carolinas Golf Association and the Virginia State Golf Association, consist of alternate shot (foursomes), four-ball match play, and singles competitions with one point at stake in each match.

The Carolinas lead 45-17-1 all-time in the series, including a stretch from 1971-87 during which the Carolinas team reeled off 17 straight victories. In recent years, the teams have been much more competitive, with the Virginias winning three straight times from 2002-2004 until the 2005 team, led by playing captain Paul Simson of Raleigh, prevailed by a seven-point margin.

The Carolinas then won in 2006 and 2007 before the Virginias team ended the streak with a 20½-15½ victory last year on the Country Club of Virginia's James River course in Richmond.

Simson, although eligible age-wise to compete as a senior for the fourth straight year, will be back as a member of the "regular" Carolinas team.

Simson won the N.C. Senior and N.C. Senior Four-Ball championships this year. Also on the Carolinas team, which will be headed by non-playing captain Jim Burgess of Kingstree, SC, a past president of the CGA, are Carolinas Mid-Amateur champion Jarrett Grimes of Columbia, SC, N.C. Mid-Amateur champion Paul Tucker of Waxhaw, NC, and Carolinas Super Senior winner Larry Boswell of Jamestown, NC

VSGA points leader Keith Decker of Martinsville, a seven-time VSGA golfer of the year, and legendary Vinny Giles of Richmond, winner of the 2009 USGA Senior Amateur championship, headline the 24 golfers who will represent the Virginias team. With his national championship victory last month, Giles became the first player ever to win U.S. Amateur, British Amateur and U.S. Senior Amateur during a career. VSGA past president Jeff Fleishmann of Williamsburg will captain the Virginias team.

The matches will be making their first visit to the acclaimed Eagle Point Golf Club. A Tom Fazio-design opened in 2000, the 245-acre property incorporates a lowland feel. The layout combines the nearby Intracoastal Waterway with more inland Carolina Sandhills land forms and vegetation of scrub oak and pines. Eagle Point was ranked No. 83 in Golf Digest’s listing of "America’s 100 Greatest Courses for 2009-10."

At 7,258 yards with a 75.5 rating and 141 slope, Eagle Point provides a strong test of golf, which is enhanced by the prevailing wind from the Atlantic Ocean, just a mile away to the east.
