VIRGINIAS WINS THE 27th VIRGINIAS-CAROLINAS JUNIOR MATCHES
LYNCHBURG, VA (8/16/09) –– The eight-golfer Virginias team won four final day singles matches and halved two others to post a three-point win against their Carolinas counterparts to claim the 27th Virginias-Carolinas Junior Matches, which concluded today at Boonsboro Country Club. One point was available per each match.
Owners of a one-point edge entering the final day, Virginias outscored their opponents 5-3 in singles to record a 9˝-6˝ victory. Virginias notched its third straight win in the series and recorded its second straight win on Virginia soil, having triumphed in 2007 at Boonsboro.
Virginias’ juniors went unbeaten in the first five matches to help the team build a 4-1 lead and retain the Vinny Giles Trophy, honoring the Virginia amateur legend.
In the early going, central Virginian Matthew Ball Jr. (Richmond, Va.) scored a win in the first match, getting past Caulder Moore (Isle of Palms, S.C.), 1 up. Virginias also registered victories in matches three and four as Ji Soo Park (Centreville, Va.) bested Sam Packard, 2 and 1, while Daniel Walker (Earlysville, Va.) posted a 5 and 4 triumph over John Conners (Apex, N.C.). Walker contributed a team-best three points over the weekend for Virginias.
During the decisive opening span of matches, Aaron Barna (Hurricane, W.Va.) halved Parker Allen (Blythewood, S.C.) and Adam Ball (Richmond, Va.) halved Collin Witiak (Columbia, S.C.) as Virginias built a three-point lead.
Carolinas won matches six and seven, with Thomas Bradshaw (Columbia, S.C.) scoring a 3 and 2 win over Nick Austin (Midlothian, Va.), while Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) got past Jake Mondy (Blacksburg, Va.), 1 up. Cone, the reigning Carolinas Junior Amateur champion, posted a team-best two-and-a-half points in this year’s matches for Carolinas.
In the last singles match, three-time reigning VSGA Junior Match Play champion Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) bested Andy Knox (Cary, N.C.), 6 and 5.
Carolinas leads the all-time series, 14-12-1, but Virginias owns an 8-3-1 advantage in the last 12 meetings dating back to 1998.
