JARRETT GRIMES EDGES MARK SLAWTER IN PLAYOFF FOR WIN

Durham, NC (4/19/09) – Jarrett Grimes of Columbia, SC led wire to wire to capture the Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship at Treyburn Country Club. Grimes needed a one-hole playoff to edge Mark Slawter of Wake Forest, NC. Grimes, who plays out of Northwoods Country Club, capped a five-foot birdie the par-4 18th in the playoff to best Slawter.

Grimes held a two-shot lead over Slawter heading into the final round and upped his lead to as many as five shots after the 13th hole. Slawter, who regained his amateur status in 2007, fought back with birdies on 14, 16, 17 and 18 to finish tied with Grimes at 5-under par after regulation play.

2008 NC Mid-Amateur Champion Uly Grisette of Clemmons, NC fired the tournament’s best score, a 67 to finish alone in 3rd.

Defending Champion Robert Godfrey of Seneca, SC tied for 19th.

This is the fifth CGA championship hosted by Treyburn Country Club.

DEFENDING CHAMP GODFREY FACES STERN CHALLENGES IN 29th CAROLINAS MID-AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP, APR. 17-19

WEST END, NC (4/13/09) -- Defending champion Robert Godfrey of Seneca, SC will face some stern challenges when the 29th Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship is played April 17-19 at Treyburn Country Club in Durham, NC.

The 35-year-old driving range operator, who took the 2008 title by a two-stroke margin at Greenville CC's Chanticleer course in Greenville, SC will be going against a number of former champions as well as several players who recently won qualifying events for this championship.

Former champions who are entered in this year's 54-hole competition for golfers ages 30 and over are: Bob Varn of Orangeburg, SC (1986), Paul Simson of Raleigh (1990, 1991, 1994 and 1997), Steve Slayden of Charlotte (1999), Keith Harris of Southern Pines (2000, 2002), John Finster of Wake Forest, NC (2005) and Walter Todd of Laurens, SC (2007). Finster set the all-time scoring record with a 14-under-par 199 in 2005 at Mimosa Hills in Morganton, NC.

Other potential challengers include John Sandifer of Winston-Salem, NC, who beat out 88 players to win the sectional qualifying medal at Pinewild CC in Pinehurst with his 2-under-par 69 on March 30th; Tucker Sampson of Matthews, NC, whose 2-under-par 70 was best among the 88 players at Pine Lake CC in Charlotte on March 31st; Richard Douglas of Cashiers, NC who topped the field of 34 players at the CC of Orangeburg, SC with a 1-under-par 70; and Mark Armistead of Cary, NC who shot an even-par 72 at Brook Valley CC in Greenville, NC, despite high winds and tough to putt bermuda grass greens. His score was the best by three strokes among the field of 74 golfers.

In addition to some talented players, Godfrey will also faced a demanding Treyburn Country Club par-72 course that will play at 6,918 yards for the Mid-Amateur. The Tom Fazio-designed layout, which opened in 1988, previously hosted the Carolinas Mid-Amateur in 1991. Treyburn was also the venue for the 1993 Carolinas Amateur, the 2000 North Carolina Mid-Amateur and the 2004 N.C. Senior Four-Ball Championship.
