Carolinas Wins 8th Mid-Atlantic Challenge by One Point

Southern Pines, NC (8/2/09) -- Final results of the 8th Mid-Atlantic Challenge (Junior Girls' Team Matches) hosted by Mid-Pines Inn and Golf Club in Southern Pines, NC on Sunday, August 2, 2009.  Par 36-36-72, 6185 yards.

The Carolinas Girls Team fought off rainy and wet conditions and eked out a 1/2 point victory in the 8th Mid-Atlantic Challenge Junior Girls' Team Matches at Mid-Pines Inn and Golf Club in Southern Pines, NC.

Sunday's round consisted of 8 singles matches that were worth one point a piece.  After a few rain delays, the closely knit Carolinas team finished strong by earning a full point in four matches and halving two matches for the final victory of 6 1/2 to 5 1/2.

The matches were decided by the last match of the day which paired Elizabeth Thompson of Charleston, SC against Paige Reese of South Hill, VA.

The Carolinas girls have now won six times in the eight-year history of the event and leads the series 6-1-1.

After winning three straight times, the Carolinians tied their Virginia-Maryland opposition in 2007 on the Country Club of North Carolina's Cardinal course. Then, a year ago at Danville (VA) Country Club, they squeezed out a one point victory.  The Carolinians prevailed by a 10-point margin at Independence GC in Midlothian, VA in 2004, by a five-point margin at Pine Needles Lodge & GC in Southern Pines, NC in 2005, and by a four-point margin in 2006 at Independence GC.

This years matches are being conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association which is celebrating 100 years of serving amateur golf in the Carolinas this year.
