Pinehurst NC (8/13/09) - Last year when Don Detweiler asked Paul Simson to be
his partner in the Carolinas Senior 4-Ball at Landfall Paul said "Yes, if you
will prepare yourself to win."
Don took his words to heart and the Raleigh team has won two of the three
Carolinas Golf Association 4-Ball events they have entered. A second place in
the Carolinas Senior 4-Ball in Greenville, SC early this year is their only
blemish.
After another slow start, the duo caught fire on the back nine again, carding
five birdies to easily win by four shots. The outcome was in doubt for a while
as they held just a one shot advantage with nine holes to go over the 2004
champions, Don Slater and Lea Couch. Brothers Julian and John Bunn of Raleigh
had their best finish in a CGA team event with a tie for second.
John Fritz made the most of his Senior debut with partner Walt Andrews by
matching Simson and Detweiler’s low tournament round of 66. John became eligible
the day before the event started. The defending champions, Logan Jackson and
David Strawn, could not get the putts to drop and finished a disappointing 8th
in their quest for three in a row.
WEST END, NC (8/10/09) - Defending champions Logan Jackson of Winston-Salem
and David Strawn of Charlotte will face some strong challengers when the
Carolinas Golf Association conducts its 9th North Carolina Senior Four-Ball
Championship at Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst, Aug. 11-13
A number of past champions among this year's entries are possible contenders.
They include: 2006 winners Bob Desjardins of Matthews and Bill Boles of Wilson;
2004 winners Lea Couch Jr. of Bahama and Donald Slater of Durham, and reigning
Carolinas Super Senior champion Larry Boswell of Jamestown, who won the 2002
title with Ronnie Grove of Raleigh. This year, Boswell has joined forces with
Jay Gardner of High Point. Also in the field is Paul Simson of Raleigh, the
CGA's Player of the Year in 2005 and 2008 and CGA Senior Player of the Year the
past three years. Simson will play with Don Detweiler, also of Raleigh.
Jackson and Strawn will be seeking their third straight title in this 54-hole
event for golfers ages 55 and older. After finishing second in 2006, Jackson, a
former Wake Forest University golfer, and Strawn, runnerup in the 1973 U.S.
Amateur, first stepped into the winner's circle in 2007 at Mimosa Hills Golf &
Country Club in Morganton, NC. Then, last year at Benvenue CC in Rocky Mount,
they combined for a 204 total to beat out two runnerup teams by a one-stroke
margin. Strawn also won the championship in 2005 with Woody Greene of Charlotte.
The field of 69 teams will be cut to the low 30 teams and ties after 36
holes. The top 20 overall teams after 54 holes win merchandise prizes.
The tournament will be played on the Gene Hamm-designed Magnolia course at
Pinewild. The par-72 layout, which was renovated in 2007, will play at 6,751
yards.
