4TH CAROLINAS PRO-JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP TO USE "PINEHURST" STYLE OF PLAY, AUG. 10

WEST END, NC (8/6/09) The 4th Carolinas Pro-Junior Championship at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, NC on August 10th will employ an unusual format.

The Carolinas Golf Association event is an 18-hole stroke play competition using the "Pinehurst-style" of modified alternate shot. In true alternate shot (or foursomes), two players use one ball and alternate shots all the way around the course. In the modified alternate shot used at the CGA's Father-Son and Parent-Child, both players hit tee shots, select the ball they want to play and then alternate shots until the ball is hole. In the Pinehurst style, both team members hit tee shots, switch balls for the second shot, select one ball for the third shot, then alternate shots until the ball is holed.

The competition will be staged on the par-72 Club at Irish Creek, which re-opened in 2007 after a complete re-design by Davis Love III. The course, built on the site of the former Kannapolis Country Club, includes four entirely new holes and 14 that were extensively reworked. Male professionals and boys 14-18 will play from the championship tees on the front nine and the back tees on the back nine for a total yardage of 6,750 yards. Female professionals, boys 12-13 and the girls will play from the middle tees (5,867 yards), while 11-and-under will play the forward tees (5,146 yards)

New champions are assured because 2008 winners Jeffrey Peck and Quent Mather of Charlotte are not entered this year. A year ago on the West Course at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, NC, Peck and Mather won with a five-under-par 67. Among the 38 teams in the 2009 field is one comprised of host professional Alan Cress and his son Walker.

Trophies are awarded to the champion team, the runnerup team and the third-place team.
