CAROLINAS GIRLS' CHAMPION MAUREEN DUNNAGAN A FAVORITE IN S.C. JUNIOR MATCH PLAY, JULY 7-10

WEST END, NC (7/6/09) - Recently crowned Carolinas Junior Girls champion Maureen Dunnagan of Lexington, SC will be one of the favorites when the Carolinas Golf Association conducts its 32nd South Carolina Junior Match Play Championship July 7-10 at Rock Hill Country Club.

Dunnagan took the Carolinas Girls title by scoring a 6 & 4 victory over fellow Lexington High School classmate Kathryn Miranda in the final match on July 2nd at Furman University Golf Club. Along the way, she defeated her cousin, Danielle Dunnagan of Lexington in the semifinals. Maureen, 17, will be chasing her first S.C. Junior Girls' championship after finishing as runnerup in 2006 and 2008. Also among the girls' favorites is Rachel Uremovich of Hilton Head Island, who won this championship in 2006.

New champions are assured in both the Boys' 14-18 division and in the Girls' Division since neither of last year's winners are entered in 2009. A year ago at Woodcreek Farms in Elgin, SC, Crawford Reeves of Greenville won the title for the second straight year by scoring a 5 & 4 victory over Will Murphy of Columbia. In the Girls' division, Haley Stephens of Greer defeated Dunnagan by a 5 & 4 margin.

Potential contenders in the Boys' 14-18 division are Thomas Bradshaw of Columbia, who is ranked No. 5 among South Carolina juniors; and Cory Taylor of Greer, who is ranked No. 6.

The youngsters playing in the Boys 14-18 age division not only will be competing for the James T. Worley trophy that goes to the winner, but also for a berth on the team that represents the CGA in the Carolinas-Virginias Junior Boys Team Matches. The champion earns a spot on the Carolinas team that will play a Virginias squad Aug. 14-16 at Boonsboro CC in Lynchburg, VA.

In the Girls division, the winner receives the Jane Crum Covington trophy and an invitation to represent the CGA in the Mid-Atlantic Challenge, which will be played Aug. 1-2 at Mid Pines Resort in Southern Pines, NC.

The championship also has a competition for boys ages 13 and under.

The Carolinas Golf Association received 195 entries for the championship, with the starting field comprising 171 boys and girls.

The event will be played on the A.W. Tillinghast-designed, par-72 Rock Hill CC course. The older boys will play the layout at 6,550 yards, while the girls and the 13-and-under boys will play a course set up at approximately 5,800 yards.
