Pine Needles Blaze Won't Stop Tar Heel Cup Matches
WEST END, NC (4/2/09) - Despite a fire last month that damaged the dining
room and golf shop, the 15th Tar Heel Cup Matches at Pine Needles Lodge &
Golf Club in Southern Pines, NC will go on as scheduled, April 6-7.
A team of eight North Carolina golf professionals will be chasing their
ninth straight victory and their 13th overall when they go against eight
North Carolina amateurs in this Ryder Cup-type competition, which is jointly
conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association and the Carolinas PGA Section.
The professionals, who rolled to a 21 1/2 to 14 1/2 victory last year at
nearby Pinewild Country Club, have lost only twice in the event's history --
in the inaugural matches at Pinewild CC in 1995 and at Tobacco Road GC in Sanford in 2000. The Tar Heel Cup Matches
are being played at Pine Needles for the third time in the last four years.
Amateur Paul Simson of Raleigh, who was the CGA Player of the Year in
1998, 2005 and 2008 and the association's Senior Player of the Year for the
past three years, will become the only golfer to compete in all 15 Tar Heel
Cup matches.
Although the Tar Heel Cup format remains one day of Four-Ball matches and
one day of Singles matches, the scoring system has been changed to award one
point to the winner of each match.
Thus, it requires 6 1/2 points to win the Cup. In the past, scoring was
based on the Nassau system with three points at stake in each match -- one
point for winning the front nine, one point for winning the back nine and
one point for winning the overall 18.
The Pine Needles course, designed by legendary architect Donald Ross in
1927 and restored in 2004 by John Fought, is home to hugely popular teacher
Peggy Kirk Bell, who owns the facility.
Not a long course by today's standards, the par 5s can be reached in two
shots by long hitters. The course's stretch comes from its variety of medium
and short par 4s that wander over hilly terrain. In order to score well,
players must position their ball carefully. Tucked in amid magnolias,
hollies, dogwoods, longleaf pines and azaleas in springtime, Pine Needles is
a delight to look at, yet a strong enough test to have hosted the U.S.
Women's Open in 1996, 2001, and 2007. The course has been ranked near the
top by a number of magazines and associations, most recently listed as the
fourth best overall course in North Carolina by the N.C. Golf Panel.
The fire on the evening of March 15th, apparently due to an electrical
short, left a large hole in the dining room floor and pro shop merchandise
was ruined by smoke and water damage. The staff set up temporary a temporary
golf shop until all repairs are completed.
