Durham, NC (7/1/10) - Final results
of the 54th Carolinas Junior Girls'
Championship hosted by Croasdaile
Country Club on Thursday, July 1,
2010. Par 36-36--72, 5986 yards.
McKenzie Talbert of N. Augusta, SC
won her first CGA major championship
title by defeating Mattie Tobey of
Denver, NC by a 6 & 4 margin.
Talbert started off the day facing
off against Elizabeth Thompson of
Charleston, SC in the semifinals and
won that match 4 & 3. Thompson dug
deep with every swing but Talbert's
steadiness proved to be too much for
every opponent she faced. "She
doesn't make many mistakes,"
Thompson said. Tobey found her way
into the final championship match by
defeating Sarah Bae of Cary, NC 1 up
in the semifinals. Unfortunately
for Tobey her putter let her down in
the finals against Talbert. "I was
really disappointed in my putting
today," Tobey said. "But I had a
great time and I feel like I had a
great week over all."
As
for Talbert's thoughts on winning
her first CGA championship title,
"My goal was to get into the finals
so I would be invited to play on the
Junior Girls' Team but winning and
being exempt from stroke play
qualifying next year isn't so bad
either!" Talbert also was the
stroke play qualifying medalist for
a second straight year.
Both Talbert and Tobey have been
invited to compete on the Carolinas
Junior Girls' Team Matches which
will be held July 31-August 2 at
Independence Golf Club in
Midlothian, VA.
Players were placed into flights for
the duration of the championship and
competed at match play.
