SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (January 21, 2020) – Larry McWane of Pinehurst, N.C. has been selected as the recipient of the 2020 Charles E. Lynch, Jr. Distinguished Service Award by the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA).

This award, established in 2016, honors an individual or group whose actions have shown a commitment to the game of golf by going above and beyond the call to make the CGA and amateur golf better in the Carolinas.

“Larry has given so much back to the game of golf in the Carolinas,” said CGA Executive Director, Jack Nance. “He has impacted countless golfers in the Carolinas through his tireless service.  He is very good at what he does, and I can’t think of a more-deserving recipient of this award.”

McWane, a member of Pinehurst Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C., was born and raised in Lynchburg, Virginia as was his wife, Joyce. He was educated in the public-school system, majored in history at the Virginia Military Institute and later in life received a degree in computer programing.

He first volunteered for a Futures Tour event in the early 1980’s as a scorer and served for many years at Kingsmill Championships in Williamsburg, Virginia.

After moving to the Carolinas, he began volunteering for the CGA and has now served for nearly a decade in various roles. He qualified as a CGA Senior Rules Official in 2015 and obtained USGA ‘Expert’ rating as a rules official in 2019. He also served for 15 years assisting as a volunteer, chairman and rules official for the North & South Championship and other Pinehurst Country Club championships.

2019 was an especially important year as McWane was selected to serve as the General Chairman of the 119th U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst Country Club. He also served as the Vice Chairman of the Scoring Group at the 2nd U.S. Senior Women’s Open at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C.

Not only has he been out on the course, making the game more enjoyable for golfers throughout the Carolinas, but he’s also helped preserve the history of golf in the Carolinas by assisting in archiving and organizing historic records at the Carolinas Golf House.

He is a currently a member of the Tin Whistles, a 116-year-old golf organization, and serves as a trustee for the Tin Whistles Scholarship Foundation which provides scholarships to qualifying students in Moore County.

During his professional career, McWane worked in banking, real estate brokerage and sales, resort and hospitality sales and management. In 2008, he retired as part owner, with his wife, of a Title Insurance Agency doing business in Virginia and North Carolina.

Joyce and Larry have three children and eight grandchildren, all living in the Roanoke and Blacksburg, Va. Area.

McWane will receive the Lynch DSA award on February 8, 2020 at Carolinas Golf Night held at the Carolina Hotel at Pinehurst Resort.
