Sam Jackson and Greg Payne of the Country Club of Lexington captured their first CGA Championship during their first event as a team at the 45th Carolinas Club Championship.

With a shotgun start at Bentwinds Country Club, Jackson and Payne began their round on No. 2. They came bursting out of the gate with an impressive stretch of birdies on Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5 to jump to an early lead. The duo birdied Nos. 9 and 10 as well to finish 6-under through their first nine holes.

“We play a pretty similar game,” said Payne. “We both just hit a lot of fairways and hit a lot of greens. It is easy for us to talk to each other out there if we have a question too, which makes it quite simple.”

On their back nine, they carded another three birdies in a row on Nos. 14, 15 and 16, which led to one of Jackson’s best shots of the day. Payne remarked, “You [Jackson] almost got a hole in one on No. 15. I thought he slammed it from there, but missed it just a bit.”

The newly-minted champions carded their final birdie of the day on their last hole, No. 1, to seal the deal. “This is the first time we have teamed up so that is really cool,” said Payne. “I think this is my last event of this year so it is always nice to end on a win.” Sam followed, “I still have two more events so this is a great confidence boost heading into the last couple of the season.”

Zac Collins and JD McNeill of North Ridge Country Club earned runners-up finishing just one stroke off the lead at 9-under-par, 63. Their incredible round was bogey-free with nine birdies including a string of birdies on Nos. 7, 8 and 9 to round out the front nine at 6-under-par, 28.

Mary-Paige King and Jonathan Frank of Salem Glen Country Club finished in a tie for third at 8-under-par, 64 with Jerry Richardson and Dustin Phillips of Devils Ridge Golf Club.

The CGA would like to extend a thank you to the members and staff of Bentwinds Country Club, including Director of Golf Evelyn Walters and Head Golf Course Superintendent Keith Roberson, for their hospitality in hosting the 45th Carolinas Club Championship.
