Eades Leads After Round 3 of NC Am

GASTONIA, N.C. (June 15, 2019) -- Third round results of the 59th North Carolina Amateur Championship at the Gaston Country Club in Gastonia, N.C. on Saturday, June 15, 2019. (6,995 yards, Par 35-35--70, Course Rating 74.4/135).

John Eades of Charlotte, N.C. fired the low round of the championship, a 6-under-par, 64, to take a two-shot lead into the final round of the 59th N.C. Amateur Championship.

Eades got off to a hot start in round lead after holing out from the fairway on the par-4, third hole for an eagle two.

“Anytime you make one from the fairway it takes some luck,” said Eades. “It was a good way to kick start the round knowing that it was going to be playing pretty difficult with the wind.”

Eades, the 2017 Carolinas Mid-Amateur champion, credited his mental game to propel him into the lead.

“So often we want every putt to go in and every shot to go well but it’s a long tournament and it’s a long life,” said Eades. “You just gotta be patient and do the work when you can. I don’t have as much time as I used to with a couple kids and a business so I think I practice more mentally than anything.”

Our 36-hole leader, Alex Goff of Kings Mountain, N.C., shot a solid third round score of 1-under-par, 69 that consisted of five birdies and four bogeys. Goff will begin the final round two off of Eades’ lead.

His fellow Gaston Country Club member, Steven Dellinger of Gastonia, N.C., will complete the final group tomorrow. Dellinger shot a one-over, 71 in the third round and will begin the final round five shots back of the lead.

Blake Taylor of Atkinson, N.C. tied for the lowest round of the championship by shooting a 6-under-par, 64 in round three. Only one other player, Chad Wilfong of Charlotte, N.C., is under par after 54-holes. Wilfong started the day one shot back, but a two-over, 72 push him down the leaderboard. Michael Chidress of Salisbury, N.C. will complete the penultimate pairing on Sunday. Childress sits at 1-over-par for the championship.

The North Carolina Amateur Championship is a 72-hole, stroke play event.

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 13th birthday by June 13, 2019, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 10.4.
