Tropical Storm Zeta came through Salisbury yesterday and the course saw heavy rain and high winds. However, thanks to the awesome staff here at the Country Club of Salisbury we were able to start on time this morning with solid course conditions, although that did not necessarily mean favorable scores.

“Building a house, moving in with the in-laws, taking care of two kids under three…” is how Matthew Younts of Greensboro, N.C. explained his preparations for this weekend. That is a perfect glance into the life of a mid-amateur (mid-am) and how many other players out here also spent their time before this event, while still managing to play highly competitive amateur golf.

Younts took the Carolinas Mid-Amateur lead today after a 2-under-par, 69 finish. Beginning his round on No. 10, Younts got off to a hot start with an eagle on No. 13 and a birdie on No. 16. Then trouble struck with a lost ball on No. 18.

“On No 18. I had a lost ball, but it was a big turning point because I was still able to make a bogey after the lost ball,” said Younts. “I got up and down from over the green on No. 1. Those two holes back-to-back kept me going.”

From there he played a bogey-free back nine with a birdie on No. 4 and finished with the low round of the day. Younts will try to stay on top tomorrow with a similar game plan as he had today.

“My strategy with how soft it is out here is to hit driver and to try and get it out as far as I can,” said Younts. “Then around the greens I favor it towards the center especially in the wind when I’m not 100% in control.”

Second place is staked by a five-way tie at 1-under-par, 70. N.C. Mid-Amateur runner-up Dan Walters of Winston-Salem, N.C., 2015 Carolinas Mid-Amateur Champion Sherrill Britt of West End, N.C., Cyrus Stewart of Raleigh, N.C., Paul Slomkowski of Colfax, N.C. and James Lightsey of Indian Land, S.C. are all just one shot off the lead entering the second round.

The second round will begin tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. with starting times until 1:32 p.m. off of No. 1 and No. 10. The field will be cut to low 60 scores and ties for the final round on Sunday.
