WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Jason Martin of Lenoir birdied six of the first 10 holes Sunday in the 38th North Carolina Amateur golf championship at Porters Neck Plantation and Country Club to assure his victory.<

Martin, 19, a golf shop attendant and rising sophomore at UNC-Greensboro, held a three-shot lead at the start of the day and finished it five ahead of John Trujillo of Wilmington.<

Martin closed with 33-35--68 for a 280 total, eight under par. He birdied the first four holes. "After that, I just wanted to hit fairways and greens," he said.<

Trujillo closed with 69--285, one ahead of Kelly Miller of Southern Pines, who shot 70--286.<

Keith Harris of Concord and Craig Bennett of Reidsville shared fourth place with 287 totals.<

"The greens here are undulating and fast, just like they are at home," Martin said. "Also, this is a long golf course, just like Cedar Rock."<

Steve Slayden of Charlotte, the 1994 Carolinas Amateur champion, shot the championship's low round Sunday, a bogey-free 66 for 289 and a tie for eighth place.<

The championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.<
