SEVEN LAKES, N.C. – Steve and Neil Wilkinson of Wilmington, N.C. won their second Father and Son golf championship title Friday at Seven Lakes CC. They won the first time in 2006.
The Wilkinson’s fired a four-under par 68 on the 6,600-yard layout to win by three strokes. They counted six birdies and two bogeys.
Steve, 55, said he was “along for the ride today,” as Neil hit several important shots on his 23rd birthday. “Dad played well, too,” Neil offered. “We came to this course playing well the first time, and we both were hitting the ball very well today too.”
Mark Wagner and stepson Tyler Clodfelter of Statesville, N.C., took second place with a two-under card of 70 with four birdies and two birdies.
Four groups shot one-under-par 71s to shared third place. John and Nicholas Fritz of Charlotte shot 35-36; Ray and Kevin Womack of Burlington, N.C. shot 35-36; Walker and Jackson Taylor of Wilmington, N.C. shot 38-33; and Leon and Kyle Tucker of Raleigh, N.C. shot 37-34. John Fritz sank a five-iron shot on the first hole for a double-eagle two.
The defending champions, Jim Pridgen of Jamestown, N.C. and Brent Pridgen of Winston-Salem, N.C., shot par 72.
The modified alternate-shot format has both players of a team hitting a tee shot. The team picks a ball at that point and plays alternately to finish the hole.
