WEST END, NC (8/12/11) - The Virginias team will be aiming for its fifth straight victory when the 29th Carolinas-Virginias Junior Team Matches are played at Boonsboro Country Club in Lynchburg, VA, August 13-14.

The matches are a Ryder Cup-like event featuring a team of eight junior golfers from the Carolinas against their counterparts from the Virginias.

The matches, which consist of alternate shot (foursomes), four-ball and singles competition, are conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association in conjunction with the Virginia State Golf Association. One point is at stake in each match.

The Virginias team won 9 to 7 last year on the Pete Dye Course at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, NC to retain the Vinny Giles Trophy and cut its deficit in the series to 14-13-1. The Carolinians opened a big lead early in this series that began in 1983, but the Virginias team has won 10 of the last 13 matchups and six of the last seven encounters.

The motto for this year's Carolinas team should be, perhaps, "Where there's a Will, there's a way." That's because the team is deep in talented guys with the first name "Will." The headliner is Will Long of Gastonia, NC, who won the Carolinas Junior Boys Championship late last month in his hometown.

Also on the team is Will Starke of Chapin, SC, who lost to Long in the Carolinas Junior on the fifth hole of a sudden-death playoff after the two had tied through the regulation 54 holes. Finally, there is Will Thomas of Cary, NC, who won last year's Dogwood State Junior title.

The non-Will members of the team are Andrew Decker of Greenville, NC; 2010 CGA South Carolina Match Play champion Cody Proveaux of Leesville, SC; Stanhope Johnson Jr., winner of this year's North Carolina Junior crown; Carson Young of Pendleton, SC, who won the 2011 CGA S.C. Match Play and Austin Langdale of Townville, SC, who won this year's South Carolina GA Junior title.

Recent Virginia State Golf Association Junior Amateur champion Jake Mondy of Blacksburg and U.S. Junior semifinalist Adam Ball of Richmond are the big guns for the Virginias team. Also on the squad are Alex Lloyd and Trey Smith, both of Virginia Beach, John David Sanderson of Suffolk, Jake Mondy's younger brother Ryan of Blacksburg and Woody Woodward of Bridgeport, WV, who is the reigning West Virginia GA Junior Match Play champion.

In 1923, British golfer and course designer, Willie Park was paid a fee of $1,000.00 for the first layout of the 18 hole course at Boonsboro Country Club. For $500, another expert tried his hand at improvements and over the next three years much thought was given to the layout of the golf course. In 1927, Fred M. Findlay was invited to complete the design and layout. Findlay supervised the construction over the next two years and though several disastrous rains were encountered, handicapping construction, the course opened on July 1, 1929. The par-72 layout will play at 6,748 yards for the youngsters.
