WEST END, NC (7/10/12) - The Carolinas
Amateur Championship, signature event of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA),
heads back to the Charlotte Country Club and begins the first round of four
total rounds on Thursday, July 12th.
The CGA received a record
setting 550 entries for the 2012 championship, which is open to male amateurs
who are legal residents of either North or South Carolina, who are members in
good standing of a CGA member club, who are at least 13 years old, and who have
a current USGA handicap index at a CGA member club of 5.4 or less.
Founded in 1910, the Charlotte CC course is a Donald Ross creation that was
thoughtfully restored in 2009 by Architect Ron Pritchard and was awarded the
2009 Best Remodel of the Year by Golf Digest and is ranked #63 in
GolfWeek’s 2012 Classic Courses. Perennially ranked among the top layouts in
the Carolinas, the course will play at 7,137 yards (par 36-35—71) for the top
amateurs in North and South Carolina.
Returning to defend his 2011 North Carolina
Amateur title is Scott Harvey who won the championship by two strokes over a
trio of competitors at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, SC. In
winning the 97th Carolinas Amateur Championship, Harvey fulfilled a lifelong
dream of matching his dad’s feat. His father, Bill Harvey, won the championship
three times (back to back in 1964 and 1965 and again in 1973). The senior
Harvey, an eight-time CGA Champion was recently honored at the 2012 CGA
Carolinas Golf Night and Annual Meeting for all of his many accomplishments in
amateur golf.
