Lansdon Robbins of Davidson, N.C. holds the lead at the 106th Carolinas Amateur Championship after the first round of play, shooting a 7-under-par, 65. He rose to the top of the leaderboard on Thursday afternoon with seven birdies, including two on the last four holes to close out his round.

“I played solid,” Robbins said after his round. “I didn’t really hit any bad shots. Made a few putts and missed in the right spot if I did miss. I really just hit a lot of greens, hit it pretty close and made some putts.”

“My ball striking and driving was good,” he added. “I think I only missed two greens in regulation. I was able to leave myself in the right spot for easy up and downs. Other than that, I was really just hitting it in the right spots on the greens, giving myself easy putts, and I was just able to roll a few in.”

Among those up and downs that Robbins had was on the par-3 16th hole. Robbins hit his shot off the tee into a green-side bunker where it looked like he might have trouble saving par; however, he was able to continue riding the momentum of a birdie on No. 15 and got up and down for par. Then, he followed that up with another birdie on No. 17 to give him the lead at 7-under-par.

As a member of the men’s golf team at UNC-Wilmington, located less than 10 minutes away from the entrance to Cape Fear Country Club, Robbins has been able to play the front-nine of the Donald Ross designed course several times during his first two seasons with the Seahawks. However, being hurt his freshman season and having an afternoon class as a redshirt freshman prevented him from knowing the back-nine as well. Nonetheless, he was able to shoot an even better score coming in to enter Friday with the lead.

Peter Fountain of Raleigh, N.C., who won the North Carolina Amateur Championship in June and recently overtook the No. 1 spot in the Carolinas Men’s Amateur Rankings, finished the day one shot off of the lead as he posted a 6-under-par, 66. Like Robbins, the University of North Carolina freshman made seven birdies, including three on the last four holes.

“I played well today. I kept the ball in front of me and just didn’t make many mistakes,” Fountain said. “If you are able to hit a lot of fairways and greens, you can go low here.”

“On the front nine, I was hitting it really well,” he continued. “I was hitting a lot of fairways, hitting it close and then I was able to make some putts. I started off well on the back nine, but bladed a wedge shot over the green on No. 13 and didn’t get up and down for a bad bogey. After that though, I was able to get it back and make three birdies in the last four holes. All in all, it was a good round.”

Robbins, Fountain and the rest of the field of 118 golfers were treated to subpar weather for their first day at the championship. Spitty rain showers seemed to pop up every 30 minutes or so, but luckily the round was not interrupted with a delay at any point. For Fountain, he said that the key to overcoming the conditions was to not complain about the rain and focus on golf as he understood that he wasn’t the only one having to deal with it.

Walker Jones of Sumter, S.C., Brady Moran of Greensboro, N.C., and Michael Childress of Salisbury, N.C. round out the top-five, finishing their opening rounds at 5-under-par, 67.

The 106th Carolinas Amateur Championship resumes tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. with starting times running until 3:20 p.m. Following the second round, the field will be cut to the low 50 scores and ties for the weekend.
