PILOT MOUNTAIN, N.C. (Aug. 1, 2025) – The 21st Dogwood State Junior Boys’ Championship saw some of North Carolina’s best junior boys’ golfers go head-to-head for four days at Pilot Knob Park Golf Course in Pilot Mountain, N.C.. After 105 holes and seven straight victories, Grayson Baucom of Hickory, N.C. was the last player standing.

The tournament began with 64 players and a round-robin format that determined who advanced to a 16-seed bracket. Baucom won all three of his qualifying matches without playing past the 15th hole.

In the Round of 16, Baucom took on Isaiah Adel of Raleigh, N.C. Baucom won the match 5 & 4 after winning five holes on the front nine to take a quick lead.

Henry Holland of Charlotte, N.C. also advanced to the quarterfinals with a 5 & 4 victory over Jackson Phipps of Raleigh, N.C., and Jude Carper of Cornelius, N.C. defeated Riley Naylor of Mooresville, N.C. in 20 holes.

Baucom was the only member of the class of 2028 to advance to the quarterfinals, where he defeated Lincoln Newton of Wallburg, N.C. 2 & 1. Newton was 1-up with 4 holes left, but Baucom recorded 2 birdies in a row and a par on No. 17 to close out the match.

Carper won his quarterfinal match as well, and Charlie Horne of Fayetteville, N.C. and Sam Terry of Thomasville, N.C. rounded out the semifinalists.

Baucom and Carper split the first nine holes of their semifinal match, each player winning three of the first six holes, and tying Nos. 7-9. Carper took the lead 1-up with a birdie on No. 13, but Baucom once again played his best down the stretch, recording birdies on Nos. 17 and 18, despite not having played No. 18 until that point.

Horne and Terry’s match had a similar start. Each won four of the first nine holes and split No. 9 to tie the first half of the match. Terry then won Nos. 10 and 11, and held onto his lead to win 1-up and advance to the championship match.

In the championship match, Baucom and Terry tied five of the first six holes. Baucom’s birdie on No. 2 gave him an early lead, and victories on Nos. 7 and 9 gave him a 2-up lead. Terry won only two holes through the match, and Baucom won Nos. 12 and 14 to take a 3-hole lead and eventually win the match.

The Carolinas Golf Association would like to thank the staff of Pilot Knob Park Golf Course for their hospitality in hosting the 21st Dogwood State Junior Boys’ Championship. We would also like to thank General Manager and Course Superintendent Chris Berrier and Head Golf Professional Sam Randazzo for their help throughout the tournament.

PILOT MOUNTAIN, N.C. (July 31, 2025)Kami Caraccia of Mooresville, N.C. emerged victorious at the 21st Dogwood State Junior Girls’ Championship closing out her first Carolinas Golf Association title with a 4&3 win over Mackenzie Cline of Cary, N.C. in Thursday’s championship match at Pilot Knob Park Golf Course in Pilot Mountain, N.C.

Caraccia went undefeated throughout the entire Championship en route to the title, showing steady resolve throughout the event. In the Championship Match, she found herself trailing 2 down early, as Cline came out strong. However, Caraccia fought back to tie the match at the turn, capitalizing on momentum and a quick rain delay that gave both players a brief reset before heading to the back nine.

After the restart, Caraccia surged ahead, winning four holes in a six hole stretch until finally clinching the match with a birdie on the par-4 15th hole.

“I’m feeling tired, it was a lot of golf,” said Caraccia following her win. “It was lots of fun though.”

The 16-year-old attributed her success to a well-rounded game and steady mindset throughout the week.

“My strongest part of my game was a little bit of everything. I feel like my driver was pretty good. I had really good approach shots too,” she said. “I was just trying to stay calm and not worry about the heat too much and focused on having a good time.”

Caraccia earned her spot in the final match with a decisive 4 & 3 victory over Mary McCarlie of Winterville, N.C. in the Semifinals and a 2 up victory over Maya Claffey of Charlotte, N.C. in the Quarterfinals. Caraccia won all three of her matches in the Group Play stage.

Cline, who reached the final for the second year in a row, put together an impressive run of her own, highlighted by a dramatic semifinal victory over Janiya Brown of McLeansville, N.C., where she advanced on the second playoff hole. She also dominated pod play earlier in the week and looked poised for the title until Caraccia’s back-nine comeback in the final.

The Carolinas Golf Association extends its sincere gratitude to Pilot Knob Park Country Club for their hospitality and for stepping in as host on short notice. The venue provided an exceptional championship setting, and the CGA is especially thankful for General Manager and Course Superintendent Chris Berrier and Head Golf Professional Sam Randazzo for making the event possible.

ARCHDALE, N.C (July 23, 2025) — The 18th Carolinas Girls’ 15 & Under Championship concluded in dramatic fashion as Kennedy Gallentine of Iron Station, N.C., won her first CGA title with an eagle on the first playoff hole at Holly Ridge Golf Links in Archdale, N.C.

Gallentine and Minyan Ou of Shelby, N.C. finished regulation play tied at 2-over 146, creating up a sudden-death playoff to determine the champion. Gallentine made the most of her second trip down the 18th hole, sinking an eagle putt to seal the win. Her performance capped off two rounds of consistent and focused play. Notably, during regulation play of her final round, Gallentine’s eagle attempt on No. 18 narrowly missed, hitting the flagstick and lipping out.

“It was difficult to judge the greens,” Gallentine said after her win. “After a while though, I got used to it and I just played it, and played it really, really well.”

Ou, who led after the first round with an impressive 2-under-par 70, was the only player in the entire championship field to post a round under par. Her consistent ball contact and short game set the pace early, and despite a second-round 76, she remained in contention until the final putt. Her first round score stood as the tournament’s best individual performance. Gallentine opened with an even-par 72 on Day 1 and was trailing by two strokes heading into the final round. The two separated themselves from the rest of the field by seven shots, as third-place finisher Riley Adkins of Greensboro, N.C., finished with a total of 9-over 153 after rounds of 77 and 76.

In the Junior Division, Minlin Ou of Shelby, N.C. took the title with rounds of 71 and 78 for a 5-over 149 total. In the Sub-Junior Division, Paris Chen of Charlotte, N.C. claimed first place with rounds of 41-41 (82).

The Carolinas Golf Association extends its appreciation to the staff and membership of Holly Ridge Golf Links for their support and hospitality throughout the week. Special thanks to Head Golf Professional Robert Faub, General Manager Nick Cromer, and Superintendent James Claybrook for helping host the 18th Carolinas Jr. Girls’ 15U Championship.

ARCHDALE, N.C. (July 22, 2025)Jackson Phipps of Raleigh, N.C. claimed victory at the 28th North Carolina Junior Boys’ 14 & Under Championship, posting rounds of 69-70 to finish at 5-under and secure the win at Holly Ridge Golf Links in Archdale, N.C.

Phipps held the overnight lead after an opening round 3-under 69 and needed a steady performance in the final round to hold off a competitive field. He delivered just that, capping off his week with a clutch birdie on the 18th hole to post a two-round total of 5-under 139 and earn his first CGA title.

“My mindset going into today was just trying my best on each shot and worrying about each individual shot as they came,” said Phipps. “I was just trying to stay positive, no matter how the round was going.”

Phipps credited his consistency on the greens and his ball speed for helping him close out the win.

“It was a little different both days,” Phipps explained. “The first day, my putting speed was really good, so I had a lot of tap-in pars and a couple birdies. Today, I drove it well, and the putting speed stayed solid. That helped me keep the momentum.”

Despite early challenges in the final round, including rainy weather conditions, Phipps remained composed under pressure.

“This morning it was pouring on the range - my clubs were soaked,” he said. “And then the first couple holes were rainy and windy but I just had to stay patient. I knew that even good shots might not get rewarded right away, so I kept my focus.”

Jack Weston of Summerfield, N.C. finished in solo second at 4-under 140 total after an impressive final round score of 5-under 67. He surged 11 spots up the leaderboard with five birdies and no bogeys, nearly catching Phipps down the stretch.

Hudson Hurt of Raleigh, N.C. rounded out the top three at 3-under 141 total. Hurt shared the lead after round one with a 3-under 69 and posted an even-par 72 on day two to secure a strong third-place finish.

The Carolinas Golf Association extends its gratitude to the staff at Holly Ridge Golf Links for hosting this year’s championship and to all the players and families for making the event a success. A special thanks to Superintendent James Claybrook, General Manager Nick Cromer, and Academy Director Robert Fube.
