Cox, a former golf professional, graduated from Jacksonville (N.C.) High School in 1988, where he was a member of the 1987 NC 4-A state championship team. He graduated from Pfeiffer College in 1993 with a degree in Sports Management. He was a member of the Falcon golf team from 1990 to 1993, and he was an all-conference team member in 1992 and 1993. He was named conference player of the year and All-American in 1992.

Cox has spent 11 years in the golf industry. In 1993, he was an assistant golf professional at Old North State Club in New London, N.C., before being named head golf professional at Stanly County Country Club in Badin in 1995. He became a Class A member of the PGA of America in 1997.

Cox was named teaching professional at Wildwood Green Golf Club in Raleigh in 1997 and became head professional at the club later that year. In November, 2000, he accepted the position of Director of Golf at Hidden Creek Country Club in Reston, VA.

Cox moved back to the North Carolina in October, 2001 to become the head golf professional at The Tillery Tradition Country Club in Mt. Gilead.

Cox and his wife, Patricia, have four children: Christopher, Elizabeth, John-Henry and Will.
