Garrett Risner of Holly Springs, N.C. went wire-to-wire to take home the title of the 16th Dogwood State Junior Boys’ Championship. Risner ended the tournament with a final round score of 3-over-par, 75, and a 10-under-par, 206 total for the Championship.

Risner seemed to be running away with this event before the final round even started and when the dust settled, he beat out his closest opponent by five total shots. Walker Isley of Oak Island, N.C. finished the Championship in second place with a 5-under-par, 211 total.

“I feel pretty good. I’m excited,” Risner said. “I definitely had a lot of practice this week which helped out.”

Risner most recently made the cut at the Carolinas Amateur Championship; an impressive feat for one of the younger players in the field. After making the cut against a strong field of players, Risner said his play at the Carolinas Amateur got his momentum going but he was able to take his game to the next level this week and get the breakthrough win.

Going into the final round, Risner held a nine-shot lead over his nearest competition, Matias La Grutta of Cary, N.C, who finished the tournament tied for third place at a 2-under-par, 214 total. Tied with La Grutta for third place was Ben Jordan of Greensboro, N.C. and Owen Kose of Holly Springs, N.C.

Throughout his round, Risner remained calm, cool and collected. With the few shots he hit that didn’t go as planned, he showed complete control, and remained focused on the next shot.

“I just tried to hit the fairway, hit the middle of the green, two putt, get in and get out,” Risner said.

As for Risner, he said he is not looking too far into the future, but he is going to enjoy his last summer days as a junior golfer before starting his college golf career this fall at Elon University.

The CGA would like to extend a thank you to the members and staff of The River Landing Course, specifically to the Murphy Family, Director of Sales Tabatha Walsh, Head Professional Marshall Scott, Superintendent Chris Humphrey and Director of Golf Larry George for their hospitality in hosting the 16th Dogwood State Junior Boys’ Championship. We would also like to thank the players and spectators for their understanding and adherence to the new COVID-19 tournament protocols.
