Stroke play medalist Bryce Hendrix of Raleigh will play No. 3 seed Eric Bae of Pinehurst in the final match of the 8th North Carolina Amateur Mach Play Championship Sunday morning at Treyburn Country Club in Durham, N.C.

Hendrix, a 20-year-old rising junior at UNC-Greensboro, needed 18 holes to defeat Will Minton of Raleigh 2 up in Saturday morning's quarterfinal round. Having the top seed 1 down thru 14 holes, Minton made a couple of late bogeys, nullifying his chances at an upset victory.

In his afternoon semifinal match against No. 4 seed JC McFadyen of Fayetteville, Hendrix came out firing at the flagstick, making eight birdies in sixteen holes for a 4&2 win. After seven holes, Hendrix was 1 down when McFadyen converted back-to-back birdies. It was then that Hendrix started an impressive display of iron play, recording birdies on five of the next six holes by drilling approach shots within five feet of the cup.

McFadyen had advanced to the semifinal by using a birdie-birdie-eagle stretch on holes 13 thru 15 to defeat Charlie Niland of Charlotte, 1 up. In the match against Hendrix, McFadyen caught a bad break when his approach rattled the flag on No. 10, and instead of nestling next to the hole, deflected off the green. He could not overcome Hendrix's back nine birdie barrage, setting a date in the final between No. 1 seed Hendrix and No. 3 seed Bae.

The 19-year-old Bae is using the North Carolina Amateur Match Play as a tune-up for the U.S. Amateur, which is being held at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California on August 14-20. The championship formats are similar; a match play bracket preceded by two rounds of stroke-play qualifying.

If this week is any indication, the rising sophomore at Wake Forest University will be taking good vibes to California. In his semifinal match against Nicholas Lyerly of Salisbury, Bae said neither player had their best game. In match play, it's about making enough shots to beat your opponent. Bae was able to do enough, include holing four birdie putts, to win 3&2.

No. 2 seed Harrison Rhoades of Raleigh put up a tough fight against Bae in the semifinal. One down on the final holes, Rhoades matched Bae's birdies on Nos. 15 and 16. A Bae birdie on 18, his sixth of the match, provided the winning margin for a 2 up victory.

Sunday's 18-hole final match to decide the winner of the Paul Simson Trophy will begin at 8:00 a.m. Bae is a two-time CGA champion while Hendrix will be searching for his first title. Scoring will be provided by the CGA throughout the championship, offering hole-by-hole updates. Live updates will also be available on the CGA’s official Twitter account, @cgagolf1909.
