Heather Appelson of Wake Forest, N.C. took the lead today at the 13th Carolinas Girls’ 15 and Under Championship with a striking 2-over-par, 74 in the first round.

“The main thing that I did really well was probably putting,” said Appelson. “I made almost every single 8-foot-putt to save par. I made some good birdie putts and I saved most of my pars.”

Appelson had a solid round with two birdies and 12 pars altogether. She attributed her strong round to her mental toughness. “When I got in trouble I picked myself back up, forgot about that shot, and moved on to the next one,” said Appelson.

Appelson hopes to carry on her momentum from today into tomorrow and just truly enjoy her second round. “I want to think of tomorrow as any other round, not put too much stress on myself and just have fun with the game.”

Just one stroke behind Appelson with a 3-over-par, 75 was McKenzie Daffin of Fort Bragg, N.C. Daffin was off to a hot start with an eagle on the first hole and she kept the momentum up, earning two birdies later in her round.

Daffin’s strategy for the final round tomorrow is quite simple, “I am just going to try to focus on hitting one shot at a time tomorrow. If I can hit a shot in the fairway, then a shot onto the green, and a two-putt, it will be a good day.”

Morgan Ketchum of Winston-Salem, N.C. carded a 5-over-par, 77 to take solo third place and she is followed by Ella Kue of Kings Mountain, N.C. by just one stroke. Kue shot a 6-over-par, 78 in her round today to set herself just four strokes off the lead.

In the Junior Division, Jenna Kim of Raleigh, N.C. is leading the pack with a 9-over-par, 81 in the first round. Kim is just 10 years old and managed a birdie on the 12th hole. The Sub-Junior is lead by Sanaa Carter of Jacksonville, N.C. with an 11-over-par, 47 finish in their 9-hole first round.

All of the players are expected to bring their competitive best tomorrow for a shot at victory in the 13th Carolinas Girls’ 15 and Under Championship.
