Cary, NC – Round 1 results for the 11th Dogwood State Junior Championship hosted by the Prestonwood Country Club (Meadows) in Cary, NC on Tuesday, August 4, 2015.

Walter Brinker of Sanford, NC used his cool, early morning starting time to get off to a hot start. Brinker playing in the first group of the day started his round with back to back birdies. The rising senior in high school added five more birdies to his card giving him the first round lead at the 11th Dogwood State Junior Championship. Brinker finished at five under the par, 67. Just two shots back of the leader is Kase Diehl of Charlotte, NC who finished his round with birdies on his final two holes for a three under 69. Four players are tied for third as Preston Ball of Raleigh, NC, Michael Childress of Salisbury, NC, John Freeman of Asheville, NC and Michael Freeman of Asheville, NC all shot two under par, 70s.

Defending Dogwood State Junior Girls’ Champion, Callista Rice of Mars Hill, NC, is looking to repeat as victor as she fired an opening round 71 to take the first round lead. Rice used four birdies on the day to help her on her quest to defend her title. On the heels of Rice is 2014 CGA Carolinas Player of the Year, Sarah Spicer of Bahama, NC.
