SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (June 9, 2016) -- The Carolinas Golf Association will conduct the 44th South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship at Bear Creek Golf Club in Hilton Head Island from June 15-19.

This is the first CGA championship hosted by Bear Creek Golf Club. The course was Rees Jones’ first solo design, and in 2006 he returned to oversee the courses’ renovation and improvements. The Club has hosted many prestigious events such as the 2014 Hilton Head Amateur and Hilton Head Open. The well maintained greens feature Super Dwarf TifEagle Bermuda, which was developed for the Lowcountry weather and water conditions. The Super Dwarf TifEagle greens have acquired quite the reputation over the last 34 years, and are noted as some of the best greens on Hilton Head Island.

68 players are expected to compete at this year's championship. The winner earns an exemption into the 102nd Carolinas Amateur Championship to be played July 14-17 at the Country Club of Charleston in Charleston, S.C.

The championship is conducted at 36 holes of stroke play followed by a cut to the low 32 players for match play. Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 13th birthday by June 15, 2016, is a legal resident of South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club that does not exceed 7.4.

Players to watch:

  • 2012 S.C. Amateur Match Play champion Matthew Laydon, 41, of Charleston. Laydon made it to the semifinals at last year's championship held at The Windermere Club before losing to eventual champion Andrew Novak.

  • Charles Dallery, 19, of Sumter. Dallery, a rising sophomore at Gardner-Webb, lost to Novak in the quarterfinals of last year's championship.

  • Thomas Todd, III, 29, of Laurens. Todd advanced to the Round of 32 at last year's championship. Todd is currently ranked 38th among Carolinas golfers.
