Kelley Topiwala breaks through and leads by one stroke


SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (July 10, 2017) -- First round results from the 11th Carolinas Girls' 15 & Under Championship at Country Club of Whispering Pines' Pines Course in Whispering Pines, N.C. (Course Rating: 73.3,129, Yards: 5701, Par: 36-36--72)

Kelley Topiwala of Matthews, N.C. carded a one-over-par 73 to take the first round lead in the Championship Division of the Carolinas Girls' 15 & Under Championship on Monday. Topiwala finished her day with four birdies on the card, including three on the inward nine to finish under-par on that nine. On her heels with a two-over-par 74 finish were Mallory Fobes of East Bend, N.C. and Mara Hirtle of Pinehurst, N.C. All three will make up the final group in Tuesday's shotgun start final round.

In the Junior Division, Ella Kue of Kings Mountain, N.C. finished with an 83 to take the lead heading into the final round on Tuesday. Behind her is Toni Blackwell of Fayetteville, N.C. who was named the most improved player (from last year's first round) in the Junior Division.

In the 9-hole Sub-Junior Division, Ella Stalvey of Elgin, S.C. carded a 43 and leads her division by one stroke. Camille Oliver, the most improved player in the Sub-Junior Division, is in second place after a 9-hole round of 44 on Monday. Sub-juniors will play 9 holes again on Tuesday to decide the division winner.

Play will begin on Tuesday, July 11 with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start for the Championship and Junior Divisions and an 11:00 a.m. shotgun start for the Sub-Junior Division. Awards and lunch will follow play.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers.
