Steve Harwell of Mooresville, N.C. is posed for the senior amateur sweep after round two of the Carolinas Senior Amateur Championship. Harwell, who won the N.C. Senior Amateur Championship in May, will take a three-shot lead into Wednesday’s third and final round.

A win tomorrow would make Harwell the third golfer in CGA history to win both the N.C. Senior Amateur and the Carolinas Senior Amateur in the same year. Ronnie Grove completed the sweep in 2000 and then Paul Simson completed the sweep in 2007.

Harwell was part of a three-way tie for the lead after round one but he was able to separate himself today and move to 13-under-par, 131 total for the first two rounds. His second round included an eagle on the par-5, 12th hole, seven birdies, one bogey and one double bogey.

Pat Thompson of Asheville, N.C., the 2015 Carolinas Senior Amateur champion, is alone in second place after a second-round score of 3-under-par, 69. His two round total of 10-under-par, 134 puts him three shots off the lead heading into the final round.

Harrison Rutter of Winston-Salem, N.C. was able to climb up the leaderboard several spots after posting a 5-under-par, 67. Combined with a first round score of 3-under-par, 69, Rutter now sits five shots off the lead.

After 36 holes, the field has been cut to the low 62 golfers who shot a combined 5-over-par or better for the first two rounds of the Championship. The field will be repaired based on score for the final round.

The Carolinas Senior Amateur Championship is conducted at 54 holes of stroke play competition. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the low 60 scores and ties for the final round. An on-course play-off is used to break a tie for the championship. The top 30 scores will receive merchandise and are exempt into the 2020 Carolinas Senior Championship.

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 55th birthday by September 30, 2019, maintains a residence in North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 10.4.
