Peter Fountain of Raleigh, N.C. has put himself in a great position entering the final round of the 106th Carolinas Amateur Championship. Fountain holds a one-shot lead as the University of North Carolina freshman attempts to win his second CGA championship of the summer.

Fountain got off to a hot start with two birdies and an eagle in his first seven holes of the day. He began to let the momentum slip though with bogies on Nos. 8, 9 and 12, before he quickly regained it and turned things around with three birdies in the last four holes of his round.

“It's definitely big when you go on a stretch where you make three bogeys to be able to finish with three birdies,” Fountain said. “It gives you a lot of confidence rather than getting down on yourself and not having momentum going into the last day.”

Fountain will be joined in the final group on Sunday by Walker Jones of Sumter, S.C. and Lansdon Robbins of Davidson, N.C. Jones finished with the low score of the day at 6-under-par, 66 as he carded seven birdies. Meanwhile Robbins, who was the solo leader after the first round, was able to play bogey-free golf on Saturday and shoot a 4-under-par, 68. The two golfers enter the final round at 13-under-par and 12-under-par respectively.

“I felt super committed to all of my shots today,” Jones said. “I felt comfortable and really settled into my round. Out here, I think it’s really important not to try and force anything and fire at the pins with the greens being as firm as they are. I just stayed patient and let the round come to me.”

The highlight of the day at Cape Fear Country Club came on the par-3 fifth hole as Blake Taylor of Atkinson, N.C. made his fourth-ever hole-in-one. He knew it was a good shot when it came off the club, so he stopped looking.

“That hole isn’t really a hole where you are thinking birdie,” Taylor said. “It was a gettable pin, but I was just focused on leaving it on the bottom shelf which is hard to do. I decided to hit a hard 8-iron, got it up in the wind, it landed as soft as possible and rolled right in.”

Jones and Robbins both know that they’ll have to play some of their best golf tomorrow if they want to come out on top. Noting Fountain’s recent success hot-streak, Jones said that he thinks the winner will have to shoot 5 or 6-under-par tomorrow, while Robbins said that he’s going to focus on making birdies early and keeping his foot on the gas.

As for Fountain, who has experience winning CGA championships with two career wins including the North Carolina Amateur Championship just three weeks ago, he too knows that he can’t let up with stiff competition looming behind him.

“Just play my game. Don't try to beat the other ones, just try to beat the course,” Fountain said of his final day strategy. “If you can beat the course, you'll have a good chance of winning. Don't focus where other people are at.”

“Obviously when you're behind, you're trying to go lower and when you're in the lead, you're trying to hold on,” he continued. “But when you only have a one-shot lead, you're basically neck and neck so you're not trying to hold on to anything. You're just trying to go lower than the other person you're playing. I think if you get to 20-under total, that will get it done so that's my goal going into tomorrow.”

The final round of the 106th Carolinas Amateur Championship begins tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. with the leaders teeing off at 10:10 a.m.
