The journey of a mid-amateur (mid-am) is always an impressive one. Many of these players are working full-time jobs, raising kids, buying houses, and still managing to play highly competitive amateur golf. Carolina Trace Country Club set the stage for these mid-ams today and many of them took advantage of the nice weather and solid course conditions to go low in the opening round.

Dan Walters of Winston-Salem, N.C. holds the lead after an opening round of 5-under-par, 67. Walters fired off five birdies in a bogey-free round to hold a one-stroke lead over the field.

“I drove it really well, which is important out here,” said Walters. “In the rough you can get some jumpers and it’s not terribly difficult rough, but you certainly can’t control it as well. I only missed a few fairways and from there it is pretty scorable.”

The field is stacked behind Walters with a four-way-tie holding second position. Timothy Driver of Holly Springs, N.C., Daniel Neveu of Pinehurst, N.C., Jack Radley of Bear Creek, N.C. and Bryce Aronson of Raleigh, N.C. all carded impressive 4-under-par, 68s to trail Walters by just one stroke. Rob Clarke of Whispering Pines, N.C. holds solo sixth position at 3-under-par, 69.

The second round will begin tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. with starting times until 2:10 p.m. off of Nos. 1 and 10. Stay tuned tomorrow to our Instagram, Twitter and Facebook for live coverage of the second round of the 28th North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship.
