The Captain’s Putter is an annual set of matches pitting top golfers from North Carolina and South Carolina (Carolinas Golf Association) against top players from Virginia and West Virginia (Virginia State Golf Association and West Virginia State Golf Association).

Rosters contain 14 regular, eight senior (age 55+) and two super senior (65+) players. The matches consist of two days of competition, with opening round four-ball and foursome matches (Friday, October 15), followed by final day singles matches (Saturday, October 16). A victory in each match scores one point in the Ryder Cup-style format, and if a match goes 18 holes without a decision, one-half point is awarded to each side.

Last year, the Virginias defeated the Carolinas 24.5 to 23.5 in a nail-biting finish and the tightest victory since 2014. The Virginias will need 24 points to retain the Captain’s Putter and the Carolinas will need 24.5 points to bring it back to the Carolinas. The overall series standing puts the Carolinas on top with 50 wins and the Virginias with 24, including a tie in 1996.

This is the first time that the Captain's Putter Team Matches will be played at Gaston Country Club. This year's Carolinas team captain is immediate-past CGA President, Gene Spencer. The Virginias will be captained by the VSGA’s immediate-past President, Michael Miller
