The opening day of the 76th Captain’s Putter Matches consisted of 12 four-ball matches, 12 foursome matches and a 12 point lead for the Carolinas team on home turf. Altogether, 24 golfers from the Carolinas and 24 golfers from the Virginias are competing in the matches. A victory in each match earns one point in the Ryder Cup-style format, and if a match goes 18 holes without a winner, one-half point is awarded to each side. The event concludes with 24 singles matches on Saturday. The Carolinas Team needs 6.5 of the 24 available points tomorrow to earn back the Captain’s Putter Trophy, while the Virginias need 18 more points to defend their title.

Four-Ball Matches

The Carolinas team got off to a strong start capturing eight of the 12 four-ball matches. The Virginias team won the remaining four matches to give the Carolinas team a four point lead heading into the afternoon foursome matches.

Jordan Utley and Dustin Groves were the first to head out on the course this morning and also the first to put a point up on the board, which went to the Virginias team after defeating Chad Wilfong and Daniel Neveu of the Carolinas, 2 & 1.

Three sides captured their matches with a swift 4 & 3 finish, all of which earned points for the Carolinas team. Timothy Driver and Walt Todd Jr., Mark Olbrych and Raymond Wooten, and Captain’s Putter mainstays Pat Thompson and Paul Simson won their matches with the largest margin of the morning.

The Virginias team earned four points in the four-ball round, all of which were won with matching 2 & 1 victories. Jordan Utley and Dustin Groves, Pat Carter and Jonathan Clark, Chris Williams and Cam Roam, and Jim Grimmett and Tim Mount contributed points towards the Virginias team.

The Carolinas regulars outscored the Virginias regulars four to three, while the Carolinas seniors captured three out of the four senior four-ball matches. Evan Long and Russ Perry, representing the Carolinas Super Seniors, won their match 2 up against John Steele and Jim Woodson.

Foursome Matches

The Carolinas controlled the afternoon foursome matches capturing 10 of the available 12 points. Josh Branyon and Jordan Sease are undefeated in the matches thus far after capturing their match in an astounding 5 & 4 victory. Mark Olbrych, Raymond Wooten, Eddie Hargett, Walter Todd, Pat Thompson, Paul Simson, Evan Long, Russ Perry, Brian Quackenbush and Michael Sims have won both of their matches and earned two points for Carolinas team so far.

Jordan Utley and Dustin Groves are the solo undefeated Virginas side after claiming a point for the Virginias team with a 1 up victory against Timothy Driver and Walt Todd Jr. The second point for the Virginias team came from two tied matches between Virginians Matt Sughrue and Philip Mahone and Carolinians Sherrill Britt and Steve Harwell as well as the match between Virginians Jack Allara and Neil Davis and Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Champions Rich Weston and Tim Teaster.

While the Carolinas team leads the matches by 12 points, there are 24 available points in the singles matches on Saturday which means it is still anybody’s game.
