Ketchum Captures the 17th Vicki DiSantis Junior

 

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (May 8, 2022) -- Final results of the 17th Vicki DiSantis Junior Girls’ Championship at Pine Island Country Club in Charlotte, N.C. on May 8, 2022. The field competed at 6,203 yards (par 35-37--72).

Rain and wind failed to hamper the effort and shot-making of the field during the opening round of the 17th Vicki DiSantis Junior Girls’ Championship. Several players carded rounds under par, including Morgan Ketchum of Winston-Salem, N.C. who landed in a tie for third at 1-under-par, 71. 

 

Ketchum came into the round with no expectations and just wanted to take what she could get from the course and drop a few putts. She started the day strong with birdies on Nos. 2 and 5, but what really lit the fire was her only bogey for the day on No. 7. 

 

“I started with a birdie on the second hole and then after that I tried to build up some momentum from there,” said Ketchum. “But I made a bogey on the seventh hole and after that I just wanted more birdies.”

 

The soon-to-be Virginia Tech Hokie carded two more birdies on Nos. 10 and 14, but she wasn’t in the clear yet. Isabella Rawl of Lexington, S.C. and Macy Pate of Winston-Salem, N.C. began to close the gap. 

 

Rawl, future Clemson University Tiger, started the day at 1-under-par, 71 and had a steady climb with birdies on Nos. 2, 7 and 17 to trail Ketchum by just two strokes. Pate, 2021 Carolinas Junior Girls’ Player of the Year, was seven strokes off the lead until she reached the back nine and birdied Nos. 10, 13, 14 and 15 to catapult up the leaderboard and put the pressure back on Ketchum to perform on the last few holes of the day.

 

“I was kind of nervous when I saw the leaderboard,” said Ketchum. “I told myself ‘don’t do anything stupid and just focus.’”

 

A string of pars on her way into the clubhouse was enough to secure her seat atop the leaderboard at 4-under-par, 140. Ketchum hoisted her third CGA Championship trophy alongside Vicki DiSantis herself.

 

“This was one of the first tournaments that I played in when I moved here so it is super exciting to get a win here,” said Ketchum. “I am also super excited for my mom. I made her walk around here for the last two days on Mother’s Day and I am sure she would have liked to have done something different, but maybe I can give her the trophy.”

 

Rawl claimed runner-up with a 2-under-par, 142 finish and Pate trailed her in third by just one stroke at 1-under-par, 143. Emily Mathews of Mebane, N.C. and Adrian Anderson of Murrells Inlet, S.C. tied for fourth at 2-over-par, 146.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers. The CGA is the second largest golf association in the country with over 700 member clubs represented by nearly 150,000 individuals.
