Sapona Club Wins Senior Interclub, Clubs at St. James Captures Inaugural Super Senior

 

 

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (October 18, 2023) – Final results of the 8th Carolinas Senior Interclub Final Four and Inaugural Carolinas Super Senior Interclub Final Four at Mid-Pines Inn & Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C. on October 18, 2023.

124 Senior and 80 Super Senior clubs (teams) came down to the final four for two beautiful days at Mid-Pines Inn & Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C., in the 8th Carolinas Senior Interclub and Inaugural Carolinas Super Senior Interclub semi-final and final matches. Our senior division comprised of 2,167 players across North and South Carolina and 1,332 Super Seniors. Seventy-three clubs qualified for senior play playoffs and forty-seven for the first year of Super Senior play.

 

The 8th Senior Final Four consisted of Sapona Club, Forsyth Country Club, Anderson Creek Golf Club, and the Country Club of Charleston. Sapona Club was here for its second appearance in a row in the Final Four after losing in the 2022 Final Four to Pinehurst Country Club. Forsyth Country Club dominated their way through the playoffs so far, winning by an average of nearly 7 points per match. Anderson Creek GC won 9 consecutive matches heading into the Final Four. The lone South Carolina team, the Country Club of Charleston, returned for their second year in a row.

 

Sunny skies allowed for a beautiful finishing day for the conclusion of the long season of the very popular Interclub format. Today’s Senior finals saw Sapona emerge victorious on the strength of 12.5 points from the duo of Chris Ingram + Bill Piotti and 11.5 from the Jeff Mast + Richard Goff team. Sapona would eventually beat Charleston by a score of 42.5 to 37.5 to take home this year’s title.

 

Tuesday saw CC of Charleston come out on top 43.5 to 36.5 over Anderson Creek in the first Senior semi-finals match-up. A strong performance from Doug Sedlacek +Lloyd Pearson, who captured 12 points for their club.

 

In the other semi-final, Sapona Club squeaked out a victory over Forsyth CC, 41 to 39. Sonny Biesecker + Jeff Mast and, Chris Ingram + Bill Piotti each captured 12 points for their side. Mike Gwyn + Robert Fentress collected 12 points in the loss for Forsyth.

 

Our Super Senior side saw Rock Hill Country Club, the first South Carolina team to punch its ticket to 1st Final Four after winning seven matches in a row, dating back to the regular season, Umstead Pines Golf & Swim Club, who had won four consecutive playoff matches, The Clubs at St. James, in its the first year participating in Interclub, and Pinehurst CC (Team Coore), the lone Pinehurst team remaining after starting the playoffs with six total teams.

 

 

The Super Senior Finals saw The Clubs at St. James (1) defeat Rock Hill 42.5 to 37.5 for the inaugural title in just its first year of competing in Interclub. Curt Thompson + Curt Mumaw would secure a team-leading 12.5 points, while Brett Paladino + Phil Boyer helped with 12 points. 

 

The Inaugural Carolinas Super Senior Interclub Final four match-ups saw The Clubs at St. James(1) prevail over Pinehurst CC (Team Coore) 41.5 to 38.5 in semi-final number one on Tuesday. John Vig + Rod Bland secured an enormous 15 points for St. James, while Curt Thompson + Curt Mumaw also contributed a strong 13.5 points to help. Robert Asdal + Ron Rankin had 13.5 points in the loss for Pinehurst.

 

Semi-final number two saw Rock Hill power past Umstead Pines by a wide margin of 47 to 33. Rock Hill was led by Mike Roddey + Dexter Cook, who collected 14 points for the squad. Bart David + Sam Keziah had 12.5 points, and Jimmy Bailey + Dan Demuling also contributed 12 points in the victory.
