NCWGA Passes Tournament Operations to the CGA

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (February 20, 2024) – The North Carolina Women’s Golf Association (NCWGA), a volunteer-led organization that has serviced women golfers in North Carolina since 1950, has passed on their tournament operations to the Carolinas Golf Association. The NCWGA will no longer be operating any of its events. The CGA is excited to announce the addition of the North Carolina Women’s Amateur Championship to the CGA’s women’s championships schedule and a new program called Carolinas Ladies’ Club Days that has been adapted from the NCWGA State Play Days.

Patty Moore, president of the NCWGA and two-time champion of the North Carolina Women’s Amateur (2000, 2003) supported the Board’s decision to pass on the NC Women’s Amateur Championship. “With the Carolinas Golf Association continuing to add championships for women, we felt this was a great time to transition our event into their organization. The Carolinas Golf Association brand is very recognizable in our two states and will add stature to the North Carolina State Amateur. As much as we have a long history of running the event, we felt it would be even more successful under the Carolinas Golf Association’s direction.”

The North Carolina Women’s Amateur Championship, which will be in its 75th playing in 2024, annually crowns the women’s amateur champion in North Carolina in a 54-hole stroke play event. Past champions include Rachel Kuehn (2017), currently an All-American at Wake Forest and ranked No. 11 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings; Katherine Perry (2009, 2011), a LPGA Tour professional since 2017; and Page Marsh (1983, 1984, 1985, 1996, 1997, 1999), former professional and recently retired Head Golf Coach of the NC State Women’s Golf team. The 2024 championship will be held at Mooresville Golf Club in Mooresville, N.C. on June 11-13. More information about the championship can be found here.

New and exciting in 2024, the North Carolina Women’s Amateur Champion will receive an automatic exemption to the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship to be held August 5-11 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, OK. The Carolinas Golf Association, as an Allied Golf Association with the USGA, has received automatic exemptions for both the NC Women’s Amateur Champion and the Carolinas Women’s Amateur Champion, providing an amazing opportunity for women in the Carolinas to earn their way to the national championship through CGA events.

Jack Nance, Executive Director of the Carolinas Golf Association, praised the NCWGA.  “Since its beginning on June 14, 1950 at Alamance Country Club, this group of passionate ladies has created a well-respected golf association and championship.  We are honored to continue their great work.”

One of the most popular NCWGA programs were the State Play Days. New in 2024, this program has been adapted to fit the CGA model and has been branded as Carolinas Ladies’ Club Days. Ladies’ groups at any CGA member club (North Carolina or South Carolina) can participate and hold a Carolinas Ladies’ Club Day. The winner of that club-level competition will receive a prize from the CGA as well as recognition on the Carolinas Ladies’ Club Days website. Maggie Watts, Director of Women’s Golf at the Carolinas Golf Association, had high praise for the NCWGA and their work to promote women’s golf in North Carolina. “The NCWGA has been serving and promoting women’s golf in the Carolinas for over 70 years. Countless volunteers have served as Board members, administered tournaments, raised money for junior girls’ golf programs and so much more. We are thankful to the NCWGA for promoting women’s golf and trusting the CGA to continue to provide a competitive championship and playing opportunities for women in North Carolina. The addition of the NC Women’s Amateur and the Carolinas Ladies’ Club Days program will complement our current women’s golf programming and we will continue to provide a high level of service and opportunity to female golfers in the Carolinas.”
