Virginia-Maryland Rallies to Win the Mid-Atlantic Challenge

PINEHURST, N.C.–– The eight-player Virginia-Maryland team notched a one-point comeback victory, 6½-5½  to claim the 12th Mid-Atlantic Girls’ Challenge, which concluded today at The Country Club of North Carolina’s Cardinal Course.

After trailing by two points (3-1) following Saturday’s opening day four-ball encounters, Virginia-Maryland registered a three-point victory (5½-2½) in concluding singles’ matches. Virginia-Maryland accounted for five wins and a halve to post its second win in the past three years in the series, having won in 2011 at Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club.

Altogether, Virginia-Maryland won each of the final four and five of the last six matches on the last day. The four players from Maryland went undefeated in singles’ with Killian Casson (Ellicott City, Md.) as well as Delaney Shah (North Potomac, Md.), McKelvin (Westminster, Md.) and Lauren Kim (Woodstock, Md.) each recording victories. Elizabeth Bose of Norfolk, Va., also returned a win during Virginia-Maryland’s late surge. Additionally, Lyndsey Hunnell (Troutville, Va.) contributed a halve and a half-point for Virginia-Maryland. McKelvin contributed a team-leading two points for the Virginia-Maryland side over the weekend.

For Carolinas, Kelli Murphy (Elgin, S.C.) and Reona Hirai (Summerville, S.C.) each scored wins on the final day. Murphy paced Carolinas’ in the two-day event, notching a team-best two points.       

Carolinas leads the all-time series, 8-3-1.
