Murphy wins 9th Vicki Disantis Girls' Championship

Future Auburn Tiger, Kelli Murphy of Elgin, SC, finished her Carolinas junior career in style by winning the 9^th Vicki DiSantis Girls’ Championship hosted by Pine Island Country Club in Charlotte, NC. Murphy shot rounds of 71-74 to beat out Siranon Shomee of Sanford, NC by one stroke. “Words can’t describe how honored and excited I am to win one of my final junior tournaments,” said Murphy. With the winds swirling late in the day, the two time Carolinas Junior Girls’ Champion was able to manage her way around the back nine in 1-under par, “that wind was crazy out there...I just tried to hit greens, tried to lag putts and make par,” added Murphy. An emotional Murphy thanked her parents and the community of girls that she has met throughout her junior career, “they’ve become a second family out here,” said the high school senior.

Shomee, a sophomore in high school, finished in solo second after firing a tournament low 68 in the final round for a two day total of 146. Future Virginia Cavalier, Anna Redding of Concord, NC, finished alone in third with a total score of 148. 2013 North Carolina Junior Girls’ Player of the Year, Emilia Migliaccio of Cary, NC, finished tied for fourth with Bahama, North Carolina’s Jessic Spicer. Reona Hirai from Summerville, SC, the 2013 Carolinas Junior Girls Player of the Year, finished six shots back of Murphy to finish in solo sixth.

The Carolinas Golf Association would like to send a special thanks to Pine Island Country Club for hosting the Vicki DiSantis Girls’ Championship for the seventh straight year. We would also like to thank Head Golf Professional, Nick Wood, and Golf Course Superintendent, Brandon Mills, and their staffs for their hard work and long hours which helped to make another successful event.

This annual junior girls’ championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association in honor of Mrs. Vicki DiSantis of Pinehurst, NC for her many years of dedication and service to junior girls’ golf in the Carolinas.
