Carolinas takes 32nd Carolinas-Virginias Junior Team Matches

CAROLINAS TEAM WINS THE 32nd

VIRGINIAS-CAROLINAS JUNIOR MATCHES

The eight-golfer Carolinas team won five of eight closing day singles matches and halved another to post a two-point victory (9-7) against their Virginias counterparts to claim the 32nd Virginias-Carolinas Junior Matches, which concluded today at River Landing Golf Club. One point was available per each match.

Virginias owned a one-point lead (4½-3½) following Saturday’s opening day foursome and four-ball matches, but Carolinas outscored their opponents by three points (5½-2½) in concluding singles’ encounters.

Virginias swept Saturday morning’s four opening day foursome matches, but Carolinas responded, besting their opponents 9-3 the rest of the way, including winning Saturday afternoon’s four-ball encounters by three points (3½-½) to only trail by one point heading into Sunday’s singles.

With the victory, Carolinas claimed its fourth consecutive win in the series—their longest win streak since the first four years of the matches (1983-86)—and retained the Vinny Giles Trophy, awarded to the event champions.

Carolinas won the last three singles’ matches, with Alex Smalley (Wake Forest, N.C.), Trace Crowe (Bluffton, S.C.) and Henry Shimp (Charlotte, N.C.) each notching late victories to help the team to the title. Smalley bested Nathan Chuwait (Herndon, Va.), 4 and 2, Crowe got past Logan Yates (Ruckersville, Va.), 2 and 1 and Shimp defeated Tom Crow (Virginia Beach, Va.) in the anchor match, 3 and 2.

Carolinas also received wins from South Carolinians Christian Baliker of Simpsonville (6 and 4 over Teddy Hoffman of Virginia Beach, Va.) and R.J. Bartolomucci of Hilton Head (5 and 4 over Charlie Musto of Sterling, Va.).

Virginias two victories in singles’ came from Colin Bowles (Oceana, W.Va.), who defeated Nolan Mills Jr. (Charlotte, N.C.), 5 and 4, while Matthew Brittain (Ashburn, Va.) was a 5-and-3 winner over Jack Parrott (Columbia, S.C.). Bowles and Brittain registered a Virginias-best two points in the event.

In other action, Andrew Wilmoth (Raleigh, N.C.) halved Fitz Woodrow IV (Charlottesville, Va.).

For Carolinas, Baliker, Crowe, Shimp and Smalley each tied for a team-leading two points over the weekend.

Carolinas leads the all-time series, 18-13-1 and the series is 5-5-1 dating back to 2004.
