CGA Announces 29th North Carolina Senior Championship

WEST END, NC (5/13/14) -- The 29th North Carolina Senior Amateur Championship will be held at the Kinston Country Club in Kinston, NC on May 13-14, 2014.

113 players have qualified for the 2014 NC Senior Championship. The championship format is 54 holes of stroke play. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the low 60 scorers and ties. A tie for the overall championship is decided by an on-course playoff. Exempt players were accepted into the championship at the time of their entry. Non-exempt players gained entry into the championship through sectional qualifying held at Walnut Creek CC in Goldsboro, NC; High Pint CC (Willow Creek) in High Point, NC; Bentwinds CC in Fuquay-Varina, NC; and Pine Island CC in Charlotte, NC.

Established in the early 1920’s, Kinston Country Club is a Kinston landmark. Walter Bickett, who supervised the planning of the Norfolk VA Country Club, the Princess Anne Club at Virginia Beach, the municipal golf links at Norfolk, and the Portsmouth Country Club, declared the site of the local Kinston club to be ideal –one of the best in the south. The first 9 hole golf course at the site was built in 1931. In 1948, Kinston Country Club Properties, Inc. was established to build the current 18 hole course. At the heart of Kinston Country Club is a par 71, eighteen hole championship golf course designed by Ellis Maples. The spectacular layout consisting of Bermuda fairways and brand new Champion Bermuda grass greens offers a challenge to golfers of all skill levels. The championship will play at 6,317 yards, par 36-35--71.

In the 2013 NC Senior Amateur championship, Russ Perry of Winston-Salem, NC survived a three hole playoff with Jim Grainger of Charlotte, NC to win the championship. Perry, the 2010 Carolinas Senior champion and Old Town Club member, played his last 23 holes in 10-under par to catch Grainger. Perry is returning this year to defend his crown. Also returning this year is Grainger (2012 NC Senior Four-Ball Champion) who has finished in second place the last two years, losing each year in a playoff.

Other notables in the field include six-time NC Senior Champion Paul Simson (27-time CGA Champion); 2-time CGA Champion John Walters of Charlotte, NC; 3-time CGA Champion Ernie Newton, Wallburg, NC; 3-time CGA Champion Logan Jackson, Winston-Salem, NC; 5-time CGA Champion Don Detweiler of Raleigh, NC; and 3-time CGA Champion Arlis Pike of Kernersville, NC.
